secret location mulla!
I wasnt going to post it, but since I dont fish for mulloway, its not going to worry me that there will now be 400 people down there tonight!
went crabbing yesterday. crabs were pretty slow to be honest (might have something to do with the ridiculously high water at the moment?), but as i was dropping a mate back off under "this secret jetty", noticed a dude we originally thought was snagged up, getting some line back on the "snag". he called to us over for help, so we both went up the beach to see what the crack was. obviously a big fish.
he asked if I could get his gaff off his missus (obviously didnt trust her, dont blame him really), which i did, and when this beast broke the surface, gaffed him a beauty and dragged it up the beach. quite a few cyclists (some were possibly hetrosexual, although not sure) and joggers stopped to have a gander, and when it hit the beach, everyone went spastic! hoots and high 5's allround (but not with the gai cyclists).
terrible photo, but a donkey of a mulla, i reckon was easy pushing 18kgs. didnt get the old guys name though.

Bloody great fish!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

yes.
I have eaten Mulloway from this location caught by Flangies a few years back, and it was delicious. Crabs from here are good too. Would you care to explain why you would not eat fish from this location or further upriver?

This is interesting Sarcasmo
This is interesting Sarcasmo as the river is tidal so basically an inlet for most of the year until it rains and the fresh water flushes through. I have no problems at all eating the crabs and Tailor and haven'y grown and extra finger yet. A bigmulla like that I would probably release as I don't reckon eating quality would be great. I would rather one caught from the ocean which I have caught before and as you say they are delicious. So Metro what's your thinking?

I reckon river prawns and crabs taste better than ocean
And for some unknown reason I take great pride that I can get a feed of top quality seafood within sight of the city skyline. The mulla I ate from there was smaller, but I still think I would eat one. Ive personally eaten a bunch of river tailor, flatties and crabs this year and have no trouble recommending eating them. I even had a great feed of huge mussles from under canning bridge about a month ago that were delicious. If they were that bad, Fisheries, DEC etc would be saying not to eat them. I have eaten Bream and flatties from as far up as lilac hill where do other people draw the line?

big fish like that are for most once in a lifetime or a few trips between at least he deserves to eat it.
I would be more worried about eating fish out of the sound (not that it stops me) alot of bad stuff still getting dumped in there.
also most of those big fish dont live in the river all year round

Eating river mullas
I've personally taken alot of them, both from river and oceans and they are fine to eat, I found fish under 6kgs or so arnt that good eating, but the average person wouldn't tast the difference between a river fish and ocean fish, unless you have eaten alot of them you won't notice that ocean fish tast a little cleaner but the river ones are stil great eating,
