Selling a hail damaged write off

What's the deal with selling a hail damaged car that's been written off?

If it's mechanically sound but not too pretty , how much does that effect the asking price.

lets say the average price is 15000 for a fair condition one on car sales.

heaps mate, for a written off

heaps mate, for a written off car especially one that has been flooded or in a hail mstorm, its pretty much worthless, i had a car that was sold to me unknown to me, paid 19000 for it, and a couple years later went to trade it in, and low and behold it was written off due to flood damage and they offered me 2000 dollars for it, the car was being traded at 14000 before they knew that it was flood damaged, cut a long story short i fought about it with the previous person i bought it through, (caryard) and they ended up giving me the 14000 as per the previous valuation. bit of a muck around but as you could imagine i wasnt to happy.

If it's on WOVR then it is worth basically the parts value.

think that if it's been written off it cant be insured again.
IE no insurance will touch it (maybe with engineers report though) ...not even third party so basically cant be driven on road.

best to check up on the dept of transport website though

 Write-off's can be insured

Thu, 2014-09-11 10:31

Write-off's can be insured but only for 3rd party to protect yourself.  Fire, theft etc is not an option - from that perspective it's worthless and you've already been paid out the 'replacement' amount when written off.  zOOM is pretty much spot on from my understanding, it's worth what you can get for parts or scrap or what someone is willing to pay you for it but will need full disclosure but I guess hail dammage is pretty obvious!

ITO driven on the road (we had one written off in the hail storm) when the first licence renewal comes around post write-off the car should (will have to) be inspected and given a roadworthy certificate else the licence won't be renewed.

I think it is worth what someone will pay for it

full disclosure - obvious of course

I think you can insure 3rd party, but not for your own vehicle.

but I would happily do that and pay say at least $5000 for a $15000 car with hail damage if it ran fine, knowing if I crashed it I wouldn't get anything.

Sorry mate - not looking for a car at the moment though.

Could sell at auction too I think too.

I had a Nissan Patrol that

I had a Nissan Patrol that was written off in 2010 due to the Hail. It was insured for 6k and had minor damage in my opinion, though as it was 20 years old, it was written off.

I purchased it back that day for 3k, insured it through Youi (the only ones whom I could find who would insure it, and only with 3rd party) and walked away happy.

I drove it for two years and sold it for 5k (who buys a 20 year old car and doesn't expect dents). The guy who purchased it, insured it comprehensively with SGIO who apparently had a deal that they would only insure hail damaged write offs at the value on the sale document.

Two years later, he is happy...

Depending on the car, it can be done and may not affect the value too much.
