shark bay/exmouth

 Gday guys!

1st post, so be kind! :) hey was just after a few tips about boating in shark bay and exmouth.

my wife and i will be heading up end of april with our stacer 539. we are pretty new to boating (crazy for fishing but always been limited to shore based!) so was hoping to stick to more sheltered conditions/locations etc.

I have heard shark bay can get pretty windy. was just wondering what sort of conditioons to look for. i check the forecats pretty regulalry, but problem is i dont know what works for these areas, i,.e: i know around the metro area if there is a seasterly below 15knots i know usually il prob be ok. i dont really want to take any chances, so if anyone can give a rough idea of what sort of level would be considered a no-go (i.e: above 10 knots, nw etc) I would be most thankful!

cheers!

Maybe look to go to Exmouth then

The main advantage to Exmouth is there is normally at least one side of the point to get out of the wind. The bundegie ramp is facing into the gulf, the tanatbiddi ramp faces the other direction. Depending on what way the wind is forecast to come from, you can usually plan for the wind to be at you back / onshore. In a boat the size you have made mention, anything up to 15 knot winds should be ok. Exmouth normally has less swell than Perth as well so that often works in your favour.

If all else fails and the weather is crap, head to the potshot hotel and sink a skinfull.

cheers

Probalay best not to use

Probalay best not to use bundegi.when the swell and wind runs very tricky for newbys.use the marina or tantabiddi.

Inside the reef on the west sides is safe even in 15+ knots.running out from the marina can produce tuna and marks trolling..

Shark Bay.

Shark Bay has the options as well.

You have a good size boat for that area, it will get you to most areas holding fish.

Denham side is good to DHI with Easterly winds or fish the Monkey Mia side with Westerlies.

Like Exmouth, Northerly or Southerly winds can make it messy.

There are protected waters, i take the 4.2m tinnie there and found it good.

Southerly anywhere in Exie

Southerly anywhere in Exie isn't much fun but you can fish the bombies on Tantabiddi side, that's what we found a couple of weeks ago but wasn't a lot of fun anyway

We took a 5.4m Quinnie (mine) out to North Murions on a good day (Southwesterly) so plenty of options up that way mate if the weather agrees

Hey Lurch

I know it probably goes without saying, but when you fished north Murions, was it plagued with sharks? Normally is that's all.

not as bad as peak, but everyone in exmouth is usually riddled with sharks if you fish each spot for too long

We got hit a coupla times there mate but did ok. Got smashed on the Tantas side on every drift, we were fishing 125m but got done all the time in 50-60m
Felt like we had one tied to the back of the boat sometimes.

Fished monkey mia side of

Fished monkey mia side of shark bay for over 10 years now.  March - april - may.  Weather is generally very good.  Many days just glass off as far as you can see.  The really windy months are dec jan and feb.

Plenty of fishing options within a few miles of the ramp so no need to travel far.  Wind waves in the channels are the most annoying normally due to current going against the wind.  On the shallow flats there is barely a ripple (but no fish!)

Be aware pink snapper ban comes into effect on 1 may through to 31 july in the eastern gulf.
