Have a listen to yourselves, its always the same blokes throwing insults around too. Footy, sharks, Trump etc. Grow up you lot. Arent the crays on firing up down there? You should all be happy as!
Great read while Im up at work. Kept me entertained and gave me a bit of a chuckle for half an hour. Loved the old PM me banter, reminds me of the ol Petermac days.
On the actual topic though Im all for culling the fast breeding sharks such as bronzies etc, especially in areas such as Exmouth etc as over the past 5-8 years its gotten rediculous. As for Great whites, tigers I find them majestic creatures and think they should be left alone.... Just my opinion dont shoot me!!
I'm not pushing the cull versus protection argument (I think that's been flogged well and truly) but thought I'd throw some stats at the "more people, more ocean users" argument. I concede that over the years a higher percentage of people are ocean users and also that we can now easily access some remote surf/dive/fishing spots that were virtually impossible to acees in years gone by. Having said that most of the fatal attacks have been at places that have been pretty accessible for a long time.
From 1950 - 1990 the WA population grew by 290% but zero fatal shark attacks.
1990 - 1999 saw 16% population growth and 2 fatal attacks.
2000 - 2009 had 21% population growth and 5 fatal attacks - a 250% increase.
2010 - 2020 we had a 16% growth in population and 14 fatal attacks - another 280% increase.
The 1950 - 1990 zero fatals is surprising but it is hard to deny that there has been a massive increase since 2000 when Ken Crew was taken. To my simple mind there seems to be a strong correlation between the increase in attacks and the protected status since 1999. The population growth and increase in ocean users could help explain what was happening pre-2000 but I believe (and it's just my belief) that with female GW's becoming sexually mature at 14 - 16 years we are seeing a sharp rise in numbers as it's the third generation of protected GW's. Look at a family tree and the shark numbers should look much wider at the bottom. I have a relative who has 13 grandchildren and so far 17 great-grandchildren and counting. Makes sense that sharks could emulate that at least to some degree.
Not stirring up trouble but wanted to put my perspective on it. Happy to be shown the errors in my thinking!
that is my thinking on how their population has expanded and increased , combined with a higher survival rate as there is now more seals /whales for the mature models to eat ,,and consider the original science behind their low numbers is also still questionable that numbers where ever that low to begin with in 1991-99
by any measure the rapid increase in attacks world wide outstrips population growth
Precisely. To use the "more people in the water" argument means to say that popular surf break such as Lefties and Kelp Beds spent large amounts of the year with no crew in the lineup.
I used to go stay with my cousins out of holiday times and only surfed Other Side of the Moon and Rocky Point with just us in the water.
I surfed Gallows and Guillotines heaps with just me and a mate. His family had a property there and we walked down. There were very few 4WD's back then - only old Land Rovers plus the odd VW Beetle. Meant very few crew got there. My mate saw a monster tiger swim right behind me in a wave at Gallows when we were the only 2 in the water. Poor bloke went pale as fuck and screamed to get in. Obviously it wasn't interested, just like all the tigers off Perth in summer.
Thanks Andy. I was intrigued for my own knowledge and I'm a bit of a numbers man so ithought I'd share the stats. Doesn't confirm by how much the GW population has grown but the stats are pretty compelling.
I wonder how many gws have been responsible for more than 1 attack reason why i think every effort should be made to kill any shark involved in a attack on a human.
I wonder how many gws have been responsible for more than 1 attack reason why i think every effort should be made to kill any shark involved in a attack on a human.
For me . Rather eat razor mussels . Far out years ago ( long time) abs where set line baits ( pro guy) no licence required all year round . Now there gold nuggets . But must admit less traffic back then .and they have decreased in numbers big time. Like flavour of them . But nah to much hard work .
ms has stroked the belly of a female while diving, esperance way - no cage - i had a big fkn yarn to her afterwards, the shark stopped for about 30s and loved it
theres a bloke in south africa that rubs their moses which mesmerizes them - they will go almost into a katatonic state
i believe it is a single problem animal who gets old , maybe blind and couldnt be fkd to hubnt seals anymore that does the attacks
years ago diving abs in SA u would get 1 shark that would bother the divers- other divers woud recognise it - ah thats the one i saw 1, or whatever days ago its got that missing bit of fin or whatever
so same shark being inquisitive around divers, further cage diving has also changed behaviour of the species- i hate cage diving and wish it can be banned- im all for diving with them - but take the cage away
Only a matter of time before someone gets chomped again...not if anymore it's when? Was chatting a commercial diver the other weeks who think shark shields whilst do deter it will also attract sharks
his theory was if you went near road kill you would be like That stinks that's fuckin rank.... but if you were starving you would go find it and eat it
he thinks in time sharks wil learn that pulse of the sheiks and if hungry will seek it and eventually attack
So , now the govt has caught and released this ocean pussy cat , who then is liable if it decides to head back to Cot for a feed? Another thought , a shark that big would have to be at least 30 to 40 yrs old , i wonder if its following an established feeding trail.
I've watched a lot of shark week over the years and they always say GW like to follow there same tracks. So why not kill the ones that come in to close and chomp ppl up. Maybe the same ones on the kill off our coast so only kill a few of them and make our waters a bit safer. Just my thoughts
That is what i was thinking John , old fish on a pre set food run. I reckon it has been and seen many times before . They should have towed it 5 km out to sea by its tail and then let it go.
Don't disagree that it could be a set food run but wouldn't more people get taken if that was the case? I guess the shark could just cruise that run and see what turns up.
A good size great white showed interest in an inflatable full of people of Rottnest according to the news tonight, probably just doing a bit of pre-Christmas widow shopping
Aparently the the tagged 5.3 mtr fish from Cot has set beacons off down south yesterday and closed the beach. Dave willo i reckon they cruise a path that has provided tucker in the past and as you said ,eat anything that they come across.
I watched a shark week episode a while ago and a beach in california had attacks almost to the day on 3 consecutive years .
Nothing wrong with culling a few pests...Its been done plenty of times.
Bring back shark fishing along the coast for local market also, limited of course.
Facebook recently shows more and more blokes feeding the bronzies when the follow there pots up...what the phuks with that, dumb phuks dont dive obviously.
