Shattered my Okuma Cedros 55J reel this morning..........

Yea yea, know what you going to say - heard from a few before - Okuma in general is great value for a half decent product. But this morning I was absolutley shocked with the way the reel shattered.

Went to my local harbour early morning for a tailor sesh, made the cast - got a hit - retrieved, gave slack and then got caught on seaweed. I started to wind in slowly, felt it had weight, -  but no more than I have experianced before, then %$$##@ boom - the reel shattered in my hand. The handle broke off at the shaft and the section with the line guide of the outer casing came clean off. I was gob-smaked - speechless!!!

This reel in general has not given me an inch of trouble - caught nice tailor on it and now this. If I manhandled this reel I would understand, but this is totally mind boggling.

And the icing on the cake - I imported this from USA, - .................. - I guess I will be in the market to replace this now.

Sucks.

Dont you hate it when this happens. It would feel better if it was a fish that killed it, not weed.

Not good

Not good mate, In my opinion ( others might disagree ) Okuma are over rated . I have only had one my self but a few of my friends got right into them. None of my mates use them anymore either .

Cheers Grant

I have a few Vsystem reels that I bought because I liked the look. Grrrrrrrrrr. Stupid move. I now dont touch them, and since I dont have a designated squid rod I use a 1000 reel on a light flicky as my squidding outfit, and even there I wont put the Vsystem on it. Much much prefer the little old Penn I have.

I've had two (of the same model) okuma rods fail on me at pretty light load (for a 10-15kg rated rod) and wouldn't touch any of their products again.

Thanks to the great service at the place I bought them I got them replaced both times, but the second time paid the difference to upgrade to something better.

Lesson learnt!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Probably cost more to send it

Probably cost more to send it back in postage than it would be to buy a new 1

okuma

Thu, 2011-07-21 11:12

hi,

i have two Okuma Salina II reels and i love them, my wife and i have been using them for a well over a year now and we have caught some great fish including mackerel and tuna up north and big sambos down here. the only problem i had was me not oiling the bearings in the bail arm and they seized, so I called Okuma Australia which is run by Rapala in Victoria. I spoke to someone in their spare parts department and they didn’t ask where I got the reels from, I did get them in Perth but they didn’t ask. I told him what had happened and they sent me new bearings for both reels for free under the lifetime warranty. It only took 4 days, great service. I have attached the number below. Hope that helps.

Okuma Warranty

Thu, 2011-07-21 12:01

Not good to hear re the Warranty issue but to clarify Rapala/Freetime (Okuma Australian Importers) know if its an overseas model and wont offer warranty help unless its their import reel, their policy below;

Okuma Lifetime Warranty....

Rapala Freetime Australia Pty Ltd. warrants Okuma reels for life to the Original purchaser from material and manufacturing defects when these reels have been purchased in Australia from our authorised Dealers.

We cannot guarantee product that has been sourced directly by the consumer from overseas as these reels may not be manufactured to our strict Australian standards and conditions.

To claim warranty the consumer will have to send to us proof of purchase detailing the Retail store where he/she purchased the reel.

Thanks Rex - bought mine

Thu, 2011-07-21 15:23

Thanks Rex - bought mine through a online tackle shop via West USA - Carolina, so therefore cost in shipping ect ect.....and my warranty expired as the reel is 1 yr 1 month old - only get a 1 yr warranty.

Anyway - the feedback, got in touch with Okuma USA, gave them my story and the photos - they send my photos to their engineering team as the hexagon shaft broke clean - and this I question, it should not make such a clean break - and for the size of this reel IMO - the hexagon shaft should be a tat thicker - I have no issues with the drag or the rest of the reel.

They were very forthcoming as they are prepared to fix the reel and ship back to me - at a cost - at least they are communicating and willing to do something about it. I am negotiatiing now on a new shaft and new outer casing with bail arm. I am prepared to pay something for this - decision to be made when I get the cost vs a new replacement reel. They will then ship and I will make the repairs. Will know by trow.

Still sucks - but as they say, u get what you pay for.

good news

Fri, 2011-07-22 10:07

that’s good to hear. When i spoke to Okuma the guy said they are really trying hard to look after people, that’s why they started the life time warranty. a lot of people say Okuma is crap, but you can’t believe everything you hear. i have been looking at getting an Okuma Trio, for under $150 they look pretty good.

good news there mate. Be interesting to see how long the replacement lasts.

Lifetime warranty might seem good on paper but if your continually sending stuff back and forth it doesn't seem worth it to me.

Agree Matt - even though I

Agree Matt - even though I will repair and use this I now, I have a sense of doubt with the capabilities of the reel - will have to see where I go from here once repaired.
