Shimano Waxwing double hook opinions?
Hey People,
Just curious what everyone elses opinions where on this lures. Was down at trig this evening and they were getting chomped but I failed to get any hook ups. A bit frustrating although good to see they worked. Has anyone changed the hooks out for trebles or singles? I was using them straight out the box without touching up the hook points. Would this make that much difference?
On a side note I was breaking in xmas present (9' Daiwa Lateo Pirate) and could feel all the action through it but I think the rods action was a little to slow to be able to set the hook properly. Maybe my FWA rod would be better due the higher line rating?
Was using the Boy size if that makes a difference to anyone.
Cheers, Tainted.
PS The bonus of the up turned twin hook is I at least avoided the reef.

Funny that I had the exact same problem chasing tailor at rottnest I think because tailor strike from underneath the lure they don't hook up because the hooks are facing up. Since I have changed the "snag resistant" hook to a treble, I haven't used it yet but I think it will improve the hook up rate as I was getting plenty of strikes.

Also found a lot of non hook
Also found a lot of non hook ups on tuna and salmon despite plenty of strikes. Eventually did get hook ups with no fish lost during the fight.

wax wings
Hi all, I fish wax wings all the time, as soon as I buy them I upgrade the hooks to" AJI Doubles" they the same shape as the standed hooks but 10x stronger and a hell of a lot sharper!!
The last time I found the hooks was in woodvale but I'm sure if u ask another shop to order them in they would be able to get them,i think campbells wil be stocking them in the future,i showed the guys there and they liked them and from memory I think they said they were going to get them.
You wil notice a massive change in your hook up rate with the AJI's!!

Waxwing retrieve
Got a waxwing the other day and gave it a got for tailor, didn't get 1 hit. What retrieve gives it the best action, tried high, low, slow and fast with no luck. Don't want to retire it just yet.

brayds - I would have downsized but the wind wasn't playing fair. I'll definately give it a go though when the conditions are better

waxwing lures
Just got back from Warroora Station.
Queenies and trevs from the shore, boy waxwings in green and silver, replaced double with 4/0 hoodlum on 2 split rings facing up, out fished anything else. Started with Jnr size, nothing until I down sized to boy.

Wax Wings hook change
After watching my mate kill the pig with these on big tailor I bought the Black on Chrome and 1st session with got plenty of strikes and few hook ups.
I changed the double hook thingy with a 6/0 Gama Octopus and 2 split rings, hook up to clear the rocks and instant success.
Now my go to lure.
