'exactly why it is being done'....What about for the 3 people that have been killed lately. Or the 10 or so people over the last few years or the 10 or so that are likely to be killed over the next few years. When did it get so fashionable to love the GW.

The point is that its about
The point is that its about appeasement.
They have no idea if its the same shark, but by suggesting it is, its not a big problem for tourism and they only have to kill one!

Killing this shark wont bring
Killing this shark wont bring anyone back. Theres no easy way to know whether it is the right one. Even if it is, its a stretch to say its now on the hunt for humans and is likely to do it again. To kill it is driven by vengeance. If any shark is equally likely to attack someone then do we need to kill all of them, just so we feel a little safer in the water? 10 or so people may have died in the last 10 years from sharks, but 10 or so people (or more) have drowned in the last year in WA. Probably 10 or more people have died in cars in the last month or two. Needs to be put in perspective.

shooting at sharks...Hmmmmm
When I first obtained afirearm licence one of the first things I was told was that you didn't shoot at hard flat objects, this was the days before strict licencing proceedures came into being. I belive now one of the questions you have to answer in the test to get a firearm licence is "why don't you shoot at object on or under the water" a. because there is a high risk of the bullet ricocheting of the water and ending up who knows where. b. because the object looks bigger underwater and so it goes on.. don't shoot at things on or under the water, it's inherently dangerours to all involved.
There are explosive devoces that are in service with the RAN that are idealy suited to terminating the life of things underwater and have a very small shrapnel risk. They can well be used after a short training session or better still use the navy to deploy these weapons when a great white is unfortunate to come within range and it is determined that it is to be killed. The deployment of a good berly trail will get you a great white in a short period of time is it going to be the one responsable for the taking of the diver, probly not but it will show the uninformed public that we are doing something about the situation

over the last 20 + years now same time of year gws metro
always at this time of year in the metro area and south coast great whites following the whale and seal migrations, plus secluded beaches are now becoming more frequented, trajedy will keep happening if people are not wary and sharkwise,as far as im concerned the great white is only doing what it has been doing for centuries, anyway condolances to the families that this trajedy has occured recently,i did an assignment on sharks, while doing my coxwain ticket back in 1992 using csiro resources,im not an expert but this is my opinion,no need to kill but beware of great whites at this time of year,be sharkwise in other words

Cars don't kill people. It's
Cars don't kill people. It's the people driving them and they usually end up in jail. Maybe we should have a marine section at casuarina where we can jail great whites for twenty years and hope they come out rehabilitated and never pose a risk again. At least if we lock up the wrong one we'll have all the civil libertarians and Andrew mallard trying to free them. Just don't drop the soap in front of gazza narkle whitey
