Should we be pushing endangered species in our Resturants??

quote"

SEAFOOD lovers should avoid dhufish, cod and groper, and choose whiting, calamari and herring instead, scientists say.

A new guide listing the species of fish that diners should buy to help save the world's seafood stocks urges people to swap popular choices such as shark, commercial scallops, snapper and some tuna for bream, flathead and mussels.

The 2010 Australian Sustainable Seafood Guide, produced by the Australian Marine Conservation Society, analysed data from more than 300 government and peer-reviewed scientific studies and rates seafood according to its sea-to-plate journey.

"

finally they begin to see the light, should we be pushing endangered species in our Restaurants??

old hobby horse of mine that had come up again!

But in 90% of restaurants and fish mongers, they will be pushing Dhuie, Pink Snapper and other high profile endangered fish as per usual!

I agree that we should be encouraging more usage of sustainable species for our fish food needs.

I'd like to see some form of legislation in the food marketing sector to ensure we get a more even spread of fish being processed and utilised in our food markets and restaurants.

Unfortunately Tony whilst there is a demand from consumers, the the supply will flow.

Imagine the community outrage if the goverment banned particular breeds of fish from the restaurant table. Would make proabition look like a May Day street parade.

Untill we start farming these species on a large and mass productive scale, the Pro's will be out there raping and pillaging as is their right.

what i considered the most important text ,,, went on to say using environmentally destructive methods ie : trawl nets that kill ...... by catch     my belief is thats where the real problem lies but thats a sensitive subject i guess ..... seem to be disagreeing with most { man over board } if recs can have a 2 month ban why cant restaurants have the same

exactly, we have to stop

Mon, 2010-11-22 16:08

exactly, we have to stop fishing, yet can still go out and buy hundreds of kilos of dhuie and snapper etc if you got the cash to do it!

I'm all for a system of controlled utilisation of any resource, and that includes the end user. Why should some smuk with loads of cash be able to eat dhuie every night it he wanted to, yet we limited to 10months a year and 1 dhuie each when we can get out???

I tried to get KG's at a restaurant and was told nope, not available in WA. Every special these days is either coral trout, dhuie, some kind of snapper or cod!
I love pellagic game fish, yet almost impossible to get on a plate these days.

No Solution !

Mon, 2010-11-22 12:47

Not a lot of point in banning the consumption ............unless you stop the commercial capture of the species . Other wise they will just take it oversea's .

I have no problem eating any WA seafood when eating out .......the most difficult part is finding a restaurant that has some on the menu...........most seem to only offer the cheaper imported products ,to maximise their profit margin.

I won't eat sea food out unless it is WA produce .

funny you should comment

Mon, 2010-11-22 13:43

funny you should comment about banning certain species from the dinners plate in restaurants, thats exactly what South Africa did,and it worked.

Nothing wrong with snobs eating mahi mahi, spannish mackeral or other species not under threat. It's all about looking green they say...

.......Ummmmm

Mon, 2010-11-22 21:50

Perhaps a little less stereotyping of fish comsumers might be in order. What do the vast majority of we fisher folk target? I dont go out with the intention of catching trevally or mackerel for comsumption when I can go out and get Trout, Red Emperor, Scarlets, Robbo's etc.

Why should we expect others who may not fish to have to miss out at the market/resturaunt?

If Im eating out, be it up here or down south, I want to eat something that is tasty - does this make me a Snobby Schmuck with loads of cash. Please.

I wouldnt think that 'Endangered' species would be on a Resturaunts' menu - all fish stocks are Deminished to varying degrees but Endangered.....

If the Dhu fish are so endangered, why do we as responsible fishers continue to happily target them - whether to keep or release?

Good topic, Tony.

yip should have rather used

Tue, 2010-11-23 08:04

yip should have rather used the word under threat or pressure.

but the the bottom line is the restaurant trade over push species like dhuie and snapper and coral trout, when there are a lot of other fine fish that can be fish of the day.

ps just because some one likes eating a tasty spiecies, does not mean we have to eat it all the time. Thats how species become exstinct! look at Rhino horn, tiger parts and other animals when supply and demand become out of control. Never mind the top of the list, shark fin soup!!!!!
Should we kill off all the whale sharks to make the tasty broth???? I think not.

Yep, good shout this Tony, cut off demand and the supply will follow.

Put foward as an enviro thing and with lots of info at restaurants would be good like that SA initiative.

Would be interesting to see the impact.

ahhh so the one dhuie

Tue, 2011-01-25 08:47

ahhh so the one dhuie baglimit is why???? and two snapper, topped with a total cat 1 baglimit = 2 fish for them combined...WTF

Every fish and chips shop to fancy pancy eatery has snapper, dhuie, red emps etc on the feed for you.

You limited to what you can catch, but not limited to what you can eat! Thats the point. You got the cash, then you can have dhuie three times a day, every day of the year.

I think this is a good idea. and i have no idea why hob nobs cant eat other species of fish , which can taste just as fine as a snapper or dhufish , depending on how it is cooked. People gotta open up there minds a bit more , and stop being so narrow minded. A Dhufish fillet is beautiful to eat but there are plenty of other species which taste beautiful as well if not better .

its the restaurants $$$ bottom line that push the dhuis snapper etc.on to customers ,  50% mark up on say $55.00 kg.  would need 100% mark up on say $... kg.etc ,its too big an issue need Gov. to alter pros.catch.. strict guide lines then all would fall in place , on a separate issue lucky the restaurant you went to didnt know what your income was how you been any way getting out lately?

Hell mate, after paying the same price almost for KG Whiting and chips vs Dhuie and chips at Rotto this last holiday, who cares what income group you in, you being scr@wed.

my biggest grype is the total lack of variety on the menu these  days!.

Try get a grilled tuna steak, or a swordfish cuttlet or mackerial or doliphin fish or tailor or anything but Snapper or Dhuie and you come up with zero, if you dam lucky you may get a small malloway over cooked and covered in white sauce!

our local chefs need to think outside the box and there is more to cooking a fish dish that grilled Dhuie or Snapper!!!

Time to get Gordon Ramsay to our rescue ...lol

dhui & chips , more likely shark or imported ###p if they carried that variety you mentioned they may have wastage ,and the aprentices wouldnt know how to cook - one from the other , they just like to keep it simple and expensive ,i dont mind going out but draw the line at eating fish from a restaurant mainly because you dont know what your getting and getting ripped off in the process , ARE YOU BACK ON THE WATER YET

yeah Frank tub is back and out on the water these days...

point I was making is the lack of sustainable fish on the menu in most places these days.

And I agree with you that most fish & chips shops sell anything as Jew fish and then hide behind the name
