Simple, effective and quick - braid joint to heavy mono leader

For attaching a braid loop to a 80-150lb mono/floro leader - try this.

Take a 12inch peice of hollow 135lb Spectra braid (I used Izorline).

1)Form a Jerry Brown splice in the top 3inches so you have a 1/2inch loop and 2 splices of 1inch each.

2)Rat-tail the end of the mono leader and slip it inside the braid for 1inch, come out of the braid for 1/8inch, and go back into the braid and repeat over again.

3)After completing two 1inch splices, and have the mono back inside the braid continue with another splice, until the mono is up against the tag end of the JB splice, then bring the mono out through the side of the braid again.

4)Push about 1-2inches of the mono out to clear the tag end away from the braid and cut off the rat-tail.

5)Take a small flame, I used a gas lighter, and make a small mushroom on the end of the mono, AND before it hardens roll it gently between your thumb and forefinger - to make a ball approx 50% larger than the diamenter of the mono.

6)When its cooled draw the mono back through the braid so the balled end is against the braid sleeve.

7)Load up the whole splice from the loop to the plain mono and super glue the two places where the mono exits and re-enters the braid.

8)Finally glue the end of the braid where the mono first entered.

DO NOT glue the balled mono joint.

Put the loop on a fixed position - wrap the mono around your waist - and try and break it apart!!

All that has happened in my tests is that the ball end was drawn into the braid by about 1/16inch.
I also snatched a 56lb weight along my driveway and back, and the joint remained unaffected.

The whole of the above took me about 10mins to make up (per leader) so go to it Fishwreckers and give it a workout, AND, if your on a hot bite - test one live!

This is a working idea and could be poshed up a bit with a little serving on the braid mono joint/s, but for a initial test run the above is sufficient to prove there is certainly some mileage in it.

I'll test it myself as soon as we get something here that'll pull back in anger.
