9 days to exmouth!

Some 'before' shots of some gear I'm currently packing to bring up to Exmouth... would like so see the 'after' and see how much I've lost =(
Hear mackies like jigs so I thought I'd bring a few. And GTs like crunching poppers so...
Only need to pick up a Tiagra and a Japanese Twinpower in the mail and I'll be all set.....
stay tuned. ;)
Hopefully this time, will be able to LAND more than a just couple of squid, some gardies, and some nor-west snapper....

keep fooling myself that gear will make up for lack of skill.... like I said, last time I went up only LANDED squid, gardies and a days bag limit of some sort of nor-west snapper (not spangly or long nose, can't remember). poor weather might have played a part.

gives me the shudders. anyway, we'll see how we go. many, many thanks to steve for providing lodging, transportation, and boat. oh and all the game gear.... notice I have NONE.

don't anyone friggin rob me now.

Good luck man.
Thats some big bucks spent there hey.

i remember 2 years ago me and a few mates went to Pt Samson and couldnt believe our eyes...fridge door size GT's and big queenies boiling up everywhere! I had no decent fishing gear, only Kmart crap, and at the end of the day, thats how many fish I ended up getting....none!!!! i was absolutely rooted from casting cheap arse poppers all day on a cheap arse rod and reel.
Since then, I have always tried to buy the best quality gear that I could afford that suits what I am doing.

In the end, I seem to appreciate the value of them more and also look after them. Especially when you get on to the biguns. im not saying that you cant do that on 'Kmart crap', as on the same trip Matty Cook hooked up to a humungus GT on a $45 rod and reel! Matty would be around 6ft tall and the fish was (v of the tail) at his chin and head below his knees. Trento may still have a pic of this, but it was a big fella that took him nearly an hour to bring in.

Hope you have a mad trip to Exxy Kasey.
If you do, it would be worth every dollar you have spent time 2!

6/0's

No sign of any 3 gang 6/0's rigged on a metre of 80lb nylon with a good quality black swivel on the other end either. Majority of fish in my gallery taken on that very rig (occasionally with a bit of lead).

All the best for your trip Kasey but the best advise I could give you would be don't forget the KISS principle.;)

Thanks guys,
I also know that I might come back with nothing, no worries, thats fishing. Just sharing some nice pictures, and innovative gear, no bragging intended.

Sound advice Big John. Got them in a box somewhere. Trolling minnows too. Just didn't take pictures of them. As for marlin lures... Hey Steve ain't you got some spares? =P =P

In the box?

Fri, 2007-03-23 20:08

Well get them all pre rigged, sharpened and stored in a rig bag. Nothing worse than getting blown away in a good bite and you've gotta waste time making up rigs.;)

Kasey I'm not having a shot at you, you can put up whatever pics you like and fish in whatever way you like. I'm just giving you some friendly advice so you have every chance of knocking off some good fish. Pays to be adaptable IMO. Sure fishing with a floater isn't as pure as jigging or popping, but it can bring the fish around to you (especially if you use some attractant). Once the fish are behind the boat you can then bring out the toys.

Thanks Big John, Thought a

Fri, 2007-03-23 21:41

Thanks Big John,
Thought a while to try and explain why I do this but couldn't come up with a way that might try and fully convey it so all will understand but.....

I don't tie pre-rigs. I just don't. I don't actually make a bunch of pre-tied rigs and store em up for future use. Shock, horror to some... Won't I miss fish, or what if I bust off in the middle of a hotbite?

Honestly, I think it takes only slightly more time for me to tie a bottom bouncing rig, with 2 droppers, attach it with a split ring, slip a sinker through, bait it up and get it down, compared to fishing one (pre-rig) out of a bag, maybe needing to untangle or untie it, attaching it with a split ring, baiting it up, and slip a sinker through. A very good system I picked up from one of my experiences. No tangling pre-rig, and you get very proficient at your knots. Of course, alot of practice and experience and good sea legs are needed to start with.

Floater rig with leader, swivel and ganged hooks? Easy, with leader in hand uni knot to hooks, spider hitch, split ring to main line. Honestly not much difference in time to me, just got to be proficient at tying knots. And a good storage system... not having pre-tied rigs makes it a WHOLE less messy and organised tackle collection, so it helps with making rigs up on the spot; one second to get out the leader and 1 second to get out hooks.

Well, everyone has their system.... this I adopted from personal experience. I'm nowhere near the standards of those who truly make it look easy, but I try, and so far I'm comfortable with it. And no offence here, but I believe pre-tying rigs is not only less organised and messy, it makes people complacent. What if you don't have the right rig for the situation? You can't have everything prepared beforehand; angling always throws you surprises. I've seen a few people who are fine doing good nice rigs at home, taking their time, using a ruler to measure how long the rig is precisely, (i know cause I used to do this too) on stable solid ground, and when that situation hits them at sea, they can be screwd. absolutely. Can't tie a rig in the rolling seas, turn green, spew, can't fish. Done in. I believe tying all my rigs there and then not only allows me to adapt to what I want there and then, but also gives me good practice.

Ok, what a long write, but its just because I'm trying to explain what some anglers might call 'illogical!' by refusing to pre-tie rigs. Oh, one exception, trolling rigs, because crimping on high seas can be a bitch.

I also don't use suicide hooks. Refuse to use them now. Only use big long shanks for things like bottom-bouncing. Won't the bait ball up in the water than? Aha, now there is a system for that too, but the person who taught it to me swore me to secrecy =P Gotta go spy on me while I fish, if anyone really wants to know =)

Sorry, long post. One more thing, if anyone wants to jig, you have to have faith. I plan to leave a floater out while I do it, but refuse to 'succumb to the dark side'..... unless the difference in catch rate really does not make sense. Like the Singaporeans might say... 'die die also must jig!'.

Friendly advise from this side too....

Anyway, I'll keep it in mind though, thanks John. Fishing is unpredictable, so I'll do what has to be done, but I have to have faith =)

good debate, if I didn't think my reply might be beneficial to others, I would have just shut up. thanks guys!

System

Fri, 2007-03-23 21:47

Everyone's got there own system Kasey. If it works for you that's all that matters.

Regarding the dark side, I must advise you then not to waste time dropping sweetened leadheads to the bottom (this must be the grey nether world inbetween both I suppose).:)

Have fun and get stretched!

Don't bother jigging with kevlar loops. Really pisses you off when you hook a good mack on the jig and then have him bite through the kevlar after his first big run!

Nice Collection!!!

Fri, 2007-03-23 22:10

That's what you call going armed to the teeth. Go get em Kasey!!

Yep seen a lot of deckies puke after trying to tie a rig onboard a rocking and rolling boat.

Pre-rigged paternosters, I use freezer bag ties to keep them from tangling. Works for me.

I have all sorts in my rig bag but have been known to tie a fresh rig to adapt to the circumstances on the odd occaision.

Definately need plenty of wire up there. I usually crimp my wire leaders on my 3 or 4 favourite trolling lures the night before and store them in the top of the tackle box for easy access. The rest of the lures I will rig up on the spot if necessary straight out of a separate lure box.

Cheers

Sat, 2007-03-24 00:06

I am like Kasey, as i only rig up on the spot unless its lures like pushers and minnows as they are always ready to go with wire. Patternoster rig takes me about 30 sec to rig a double hooks. As for poppers and jigs i have started to just tie straight to the jig from the leader as its esier than split rings and less to go wrong.
Had a jig the other day in 25mtrs of water and got smoked twice before i gave it away. Was later told it was prob either coral trout or rankin cod hitting and going back into the hole. Even on 24kg braid which i use for my sambos back in perth i couldn't stop them.

Anyway it will all come together in 8 days Kasey.
