skippy for bait

Hi guys.

have noticed a number of people seem to target skippy for bait. Just wondering how they go? can see how they would be good as firm flesh and moderately oily. what species do you generally target with them, and what sort of rigs? and do you generally use them as whole baits, or strips on gangs?

if mainly using them for sharks etc i wont bother as dont do too much beach fishing, but if good for other things i reckon i can keep up a decent supply!

seem to be all i can catch lately, and sick of buying bait. so far havent tried them as bait as have only kept what i will eat fresh, but keen to give them a shot, so next time will keep a couple and freeze.

cheers!

One of the best KG baits you can get, apart from squid tentacles.

Fillet the skippy, cut out the middle strip of the fillet with bones in it. Use the strip for whiting bait wortks a treat.

We found years ago Skippy was very good bait for Jewies. We'd allways look what the 20kg+ jewies had been feeding on and allways found skippy in the gullet. We then made a point of fishing for big skippy of a wreck SW of rotto and would save about 20kg of skippy fillets for bait every few months.
