Smashed by a Tiger Shark

I did a solo trip to FFB on Saturday after all three my regular crew were unavailable.  Launched from Woodman Point at 05:30 and witnessed another wonderful sunrise.  The morning started well with a number of fish being boated after which all went quiet.  I looked around and noticed a Tiger Shark circling the boat and realised why the fish had disappeared.  Suddenly my 10-15kg rod loaded with a mullie on a 8/0 Gamakatsu circle hook, 60lb floro trace and 40 lb braid started protesting and the reel began loosing line at a rapid rate.  Once I locked up the drag I realised that there was something substantial on the other end and after a 30 minute fight eventually sighted the Tiger attached to the other end.  A further 30 minutes later and I had the fish at the leader when my rod decided that it had received enough abuse and broke in half.  The bites picked up afterwards again as the shark left my swim to go and sulk elsewhere.

Funny how the "Jaws" music starts playing in the mind when alone out there with a reasonable man eater in the proximity.

I have already tackled up and will touch one of these creatures of the deep before our government wipes them out.

Fair effort to get it that

Fair effort to get it that close to the boat by the looks.

Lifted the rod to high - without sounding critical that's why it broke - try to keep it at more of a 90 degree angle to the fish/shark. Otherwise probably would have got it all the way and still had your rod in one piece.

Cheers
Paul

Yep agree with this. From watching the video, that's a classic example of high sticking.

At that stage the heat, exhaustion and thirst saw common sense being taken up in the moment.

Great reel for the price

I have caught quite a few fish from the beach and boat and it has not let me down. Good drag and decent line capacity.

Tough rod, am surprised it

Tough rod, am surprised it lasted as long as it did in that fight! Nice looking shark though.

When you go to replace the rod you might also consider something shorter. Can help on a boat when you get the fish near to the boat, particularly if fishing alone and need to gaff or release by yourself.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
