Snapper spots

Im looking for a couple of pinky spots to get to in my runabout. I see that the ban ends Tuesday. I don't have a finder but can probably use phone gps. I don't eat fish I'm just looking to catch some pinkys with the old man. Also what's the best bait and rig? Feel free to pm me.

look on navionics web app and find some ground you can down load to your phone. anchor and burley using mullies then either float a bait or paternoster rig. that should get you something

Spots

Sun, 2017-01-29 22:14

Waddy, I'm sorry if this sounds blunt but not many people will give you "spots".  Not because anyone "owns" those spots but because people spend a lot of time and resources finding spots.  I have never asked for any spots but have managed to find good fish.

I would advise you to go and buy a sounder/fishfinder.  It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest.  Even a $50 secondhand unit is better than nothing..  You can then learn how to "read" different bottom (sand, rock, broken ground etc).  A lot of demersals like broken ground, whiting and squid like sand with weed patches etc.

If you don't want to buy a sounder, then do what Sea Hunter has suggested.  Alternatively, anchor near Carnac, berley, throw lines in the water and wait.  You're bound to catch something, even if its shitloads of skippy....

Mon, 2017-01-30 20:12

My old man told me to never give out my fishing spots...

He also told me to never lend my lawn mower or missus as they would both come back f@$ked!

I got the missus but I asked about the mower and he said that if they dont have their own, the grass would be long, they dont do it often and will run over every rock in their yard.

This is meant to be forum so us fishers can help each other, not that no it alls can boast about how big their fuckin dicks are or how they flog the missus.  Thanks to the guys at Oceanside for offering some assistance.  They are a great bunch there on South Street and deserve our support.  Lets help each other rather than bragging or glouting about our successes.  Surely we are bigger than that.

 Settle down Cleo. Nobody

Wed, 2017-02-01 00:30

Settle down Cleo. Nobody here is bragging about anything, "flogging the missus" or any other nonsense you are on about that has nothing to do with anything on this forum. Even non-fishers know it's poor form to ask for fishing spots so if someone wants to ask for them they best expect some rather unhelpfull responses. Trust me, the answers would of been alot shorter & ruder if the forum wasn't moderated. Most of us have thousands of hours & tens if not hundreds of thousands invested into getting to & finding our spots. If you spent so much & worked so hard on something, you're hardly likely to want to give it away for free are you? Go do the hard yards like the rest of us.

Wed, 2017-02-01 10:43

There's a guy on facebook, his name is "pinga" he knows how to shadow other boats in not so stealth mode, he basically drives right up to you when your out fishing, maybe even does a few circles, then hits "mark" on his gps. If your lucky pinga will bugger off, but sometimes he will stop right beside and even fish with you, nice guy really. You could try him ?? lol
This guy has all my spots :-)

Seriously though, send me a pm with the area's you fish and I can point you in the right direction, maybe even a couple of very general fishing marks.

Cheers

no such thing as secret spots

Thu, 2017-02-02 06:42

just need to be there when the fish are biting , suggest got to 5 f/b anchor up burly trail sit and wait or go 40s & 50s scout around -find a lump, and you may be surprised what you will catch ,people do share their spots they are just selective as to who they share with ,unfortunately if your on the outer then its going to be hard work& even if they give u spots chances are itl be fished out, for a laugh  i tune to ch. 76 and just listen up to 3 or 4 boats talking to one another in code messages/ pet names for spots how and what they are supposedly catching.

Give some thought to grabbing

Thu, 2017-02-02 08:03

Give some thought to grabbing yourself a cheap plotter mate. It is a prick to use Navionics on the phone whilst trying to navigate through chop and around reef, other boats/kayaks, cray pots as as the screen is tiny and hard to focus on with your hand bouncing around. I had to do this once through Hillarys waters when the GPS on my plotter decided to die on me and it was doable but an absolute prick.

If your lucky the previous owner will be kind enough to leave some spots on there for you too.

Mate you don't need to be

Thu, 2017-02-02 11:50

Mate you don't need to be told where the spots are. Head out one Friday ar Sat arvo and look for the sea of boats. There's a tonne of them. Then try and grab a spot around the general area.

The spots are not the secret. The voodoo magic is in the bait (fresh fresh fresh), burley (as if there won't be enough burley in the water!!) and patience (the most important bit).

Wed, 2017-02-08 10:53

Pinging is very different to every Tom Dick and Harry going to the lumps in the Sound for Snapps. The snapper move around and these spots are on public charts and I dare say no-one has an individual sport marked on the sounder for that area - you'd never get on it with all the other boats around!!! It also goes without saying you will bump shoulders when out there..

My reference is just like saying 'go out the back of GI and look for the boats' to get the general idea - it aint rocket science.

It's just the guys in Kayaks you have to watch out for - they cruise out in the dark with no Nav lights on and expect we'll see them before they go under the bow :P

I have been out there tho at times like that. Very frustrating when the boat 10m away lands a double header and you get FA all evening!!

Sand anchor and let a bit of rope out..

Nor 3 mile reef

Wed, 2017-02-08 10:21

Ive always had pretty good luck just bottom bouncing anywhere around the back of 3 mile reef nor.

If u have a GPS just hit manoverboard button everytime you get a bite and go back over them on subsequent trips and try again.

Usually get something decent but as previously said, no gaurantees anywhere.

Often best weather = no fish.

Be prepared to get a bit wet and cold.

Good luck.
