Snelled Hooks

I guess I am a bit of a novice when it comes to fishing.  Well I call myself a born again fisherman.  I use to go out with the old man a bit years ago and now I'm just trying to get back into it.  I wanna try new/better ways to catch bottom fish so I've been talking to as many people as I can and reading through this forum etc etc.  Anyway, I wanted to try snelling some hooks for my next trip out and after a bit of messing about and wasting a heap of line trying to snell hooks, I googled and eventually found this info:

How to Snell 2 or More Hooks

I thought I'd post it on here incase anyone else wanted to see a different way to snell hooks.  I like this way better than the other ways of doing it cause it looks nice and neat.  Both lines heading up and down the shank of the hook end up underneath the wraps.  I also found this method easier than the others.

Pretty much the same way i do it. The advantage of the second snell is it allows you to place the second hook exactly where you want it. You can also rotate hooks if you want. Link for the second one here (seems to be the same knot, but slightly diff camera angle/way of holding it)

I use this method for tying

Tue, 2010-02-16 19:22

I use this method for tying jigging rigs for bait fish.  Just get some Krystal Flash and place the mid point where you start the first wrap,  turn a couple of times then fold the flash over and continue with the wraps.

After you wrap the line

Wed, 2010-02-17 15:59

After you wrap the line around the 2 lines against the shank, I find it easiest to saliva up the whole lot and grab the line heading out the eye of the hook with my teeth so I can hold the wraps together with both hands.  Then I slowly pull the line with my teeth while holding the wraps quite firmly.  It should magically all pull together nicely.

I think the trick to this knot  is that when you make your loop (before you start your twists) make sure you don't have much line passing through the eye.  That way it's easier to do your wraps.  I only leave about 40mm or so.  Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to do the whole thing in about 30 seconds.  That's about how long it took me to do my third rig.  That's 30 seconds per hook I mean.

Another trick is to practice on a bigger hook.  Also a blunt hook to practice on would be handy.  Otherwise you might end up doing what I did and lodge a hook in your finger.  Good fun.

Good Luck DieHard!

Yeah - I Reckon Too

That's why I put this post up because I tried a few others unsuccessfully and all the other info I googled were a different way to this snell.  I reckon this is heaps easier and heaps neater looking too.  Not sure about the all important performance of it though???

Happy Birthday too!

its probably a dumb question, but what is the point of snelling? does it help the position of the bait or what?

For Two Hooks or More

Thu, 2010-02-18 18:58

I'm not sure.  I found someone on line saying that it pulls the hooks towards the fish's mouth when you strike but I don't know about that.  The reason I was keen to learn is so that I can use two hooks for the same bait.  It's kind of like a gang of hooks except you join the hooks using your line.  Have a bit of a google.  You will see what I mean.  I probably didn't explain myself too well.

Bait presentation

Thu, 2010-02-18 20:03

For me it's about bait presentation.  You want your bait to look natural.  Gangs or similar for mulies, twin hooks for squid and strip baits etc.

Sun, 2010-02-21 23:15

i've used the same snell for many many years and its always done the job. Rarely ever see that snell slip. I use for most of my rigs especially my big rigs. Only difference now is i use sliding snell addtion to it so i can adjust to any bait size whever needed
