I asked the same question on the Oceanside thread. Why isn't there as Aussie market, meaning why aren't they caught locally and sold. Why do we have to import from the other sidew of the planet?
we dont have a huge squid fishery that produces in the quantity needed. Australian waters simply dont have the nutrient rich waters needed for large scale trawl fisheries, except on the SE coast off Vic/Tas.
That is why we dont have the huge trawl fisheries like NZ has for example Australias total wild caught seafood in I think 2013 was 174000 tonnes NZ's was 659,000 tonnes
Australia supplies 0.2% of the worlds seafood and is 46th in the world despite being the largest island country in the world
I haven't properly researched the topic but the anecdotal evidence is that a closure, or reduced take, of the squid fishery has ocurred in the western US. I have also heard a theory about import issues. Advice is there may be more product towards the end of the year.
I'm with everyone that likes local products, and I searched hard for a wholesale supplier of WA squid and found one. Shore Catch is allowed to process bulk fish products so the retail offering from the shop is 150g average whole squid vacuum sealed in frozen 1kg lots. Who knows how long this supply will last though!
I have tested the Shark Bay product a few times with good results. It can give you tenticles, head, strip, hood or whole bait so is quite versatile. In my view, a better bait option than the small US squid, although there is no doubt they work.

Beg to differ
Personally always had far better results on these Cali squid.
Used side by side for deep drop, for Dhuies and even Landbased for Pinks and Mullas.
Have to agree on Cutly though

I will always look and search for a product made/produced/caught/grown or whatever here in Australia and don't mind at all paying a little extra !!
