Sound snapper?
Hey all,
First post, please be kind! ;-)
I'm heading out to the cockburn sound tomorrow looking to get some decent size pink snapper. I've managed to convince the misses to be Anchor gal for the evening as my usual fishing buddies are back up the mines this weekend.
I've promised her a feed of nice big snapper in return so just wanted to make sure that I'm heading in the right direction. Current plan is for an overnight stay at the top end of Garden Island with a bit of late night fishing on 3 fathom bank and then up early to catch the sun up bite in the same area.
Ive rigged up running sinker rigs with fluro and 40lb fluoro leader (smelled circle hooks). Planning to burley up like mad and bait up with squid and mullies.
Does this sound like the right plan? Not after anyone's secret spots or killer rigs. Just want to know that I'm not wasting my time and going to waste all my brownie points!
cheers!

Bang on mate
Definately on the right path Dunker, maybe try and get some scalies they are a bit more durable than mulies but if you can't mulies and whole squid are fine. Try and find some decent structure as when it gets dark the snapper Normally like to have something they can go to for protection. Don't burley to hard as you will attract to many unwanted species but keep it constant. Keep your baits fresh especially as the sun goes down as this is the prime time or tide change is another. Plenty of snapper out there at the moment. All the best , we will also be out there tomorrow night. We have been getting some big snapper of late that have been completely swallowing the baits and grinding through the leader, I would suggest at least 60 pound or even 80 for your leader until you fine tune your skills.

Heavier leader
Sounds good! I would tend to agree with Dirt on the leader though, no harm in going a little bit heavier.

Wish I saw this thread
Wish I saw this thread before we out for my first ever snapper session in the dory this morning. Burleyd up hard, caught 3 rays, a bunch of snook, and a big herring before we landed 1 sized pinky as the sun came up. Will try less burley next time.

First Snappers....hopefully, of many!
Well, it was a successful trip. Firstly there were several huge bites and runs ending up in the hooks letting go (fishing spitting them out?). Got to get used to using circle hooks!
Then 2 Snapper on board within an hour in the morning (5-6ish). 68cm and 72cm. Then one HUGE battle with what must have been a monster snapper as it snapped my 8kg rod clean in half after half an hour of fighting (definite head shakes and lunges)!
Also caught a very large PJ Shark during the evening, which was quite impressive and quite a good fight.
Thanks for the info guys, it certainly helped!
