sounder advice
so some of you may have seen that im chasing a sounder for my 14 footer.
i am looking for something just entry level - not too expensive, trying to stay under, say, $200..
anyway im looking at the humminbird piranhamax. from what i have read they are ok for the money you pay.
i gather that dual beam is better than single beam? is tri beam better again? and 8 level grey scale is better than 4 level?
the stats for the two units i am looking at are:
http://www.humminbird.com.au/products/sonargpscombos/piranhamax/piranhamax170x.html
http://www.humminbird.com.au/products/sonargpscombos/piranhamax/piranhamax180x.html
i have managed to find the 170 for $92 (normally $230ish) and the 180 for $149 (normally $280ish)
is the 180 much better than the 170? is one of them going to be easier to learn to read than the other?
thanks fellas!

go the colour 190c if you can afford
seen them the other day for $220 at kmart or bcf cant remember which one. 200khz will be fine unless you plan on fishing deeper than 100m

hmm
yeah i did see that model. only thing that made me wonder about perhaps going for one of the others was that the 190 is only single beam 200khz, while the others are dual and tri beam. also the screen on that is 3.5" compared to the 4" on the black and whites. im still learning about these but from what i gathered i thought that it was more expensive because it was coloured but to keep the cost comparable to the others they made it smaller and only single beam? so thats why i was looking at the 170 or 180 over the 190.

sonar frequency
am i correct in saying that for the boat i am putting it on having a single beam sonar of 200khz is ample? that large frequency will give a clearer image with more detail but to a shallower depth. where as if i was going deeper a dual frequency with say 83khz would be better because it would get better penetration to the floor but the picture would not be quite as accurate?

200khz is fine for shallow water
ande will give a good signal at speed the lower hz is no good when travelling but will give slightly more defanition when not moving
