Sounder help
Submitted by Carry on Sat, 2017-02-18 10:49
Gday all just wondering if someone can help with whats going on with my sounder .
This photo was taken off exmouth and it was a bit rough on that particular day . Even when it was calm i would get the same readings and couldnt seem to sound up fish. In the shallower water i can sound ground up at about 15 to 18kn any faster and it drops out intermittently.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Tim

+1 on turbulencealso angle
+1 on turbulence
also angle to rear of the tranny down slighltly so the bottom is pointing slightly forward - could be overshooting the signal return when faster
may also pay to increase the ping speed when travelling

the transducer
it is placed a fair way away from the motor at the moment i will throw another spacer in and see if that makes a difference angle wise . one question would i still get the spacing in shallower water or is it the deeper you go the worse it gets i have no problems upto about 150m - 200m but any deeper is when it happens
i will try post a pic of transducer placement after work tonight

Pulse speed
Just googled the speed that an echo sounder pulse travels through the water. It is typically around 1500 m/second so I doubt you would be driving past the return signal.

Another wedge
and lower it, I had to drop my P66 8mm below the hull line to keep the bottom.

Looks like it's a little low
Looks like it's a little low to me. I had the same combo and held bottom until 36 knots but I never got to test n deep water.

What hull
what hull do you have it mounted on , i would drop down a fraction , also from one photo you have it in line with hull rake. Which would cause it to have air bubles travelling over the tanny face , If its a trailcraft. Check if you have a water intake pipe up front as well which need s blocking to prevent air bubbles along underside of hull
i would drop the left hands side a fraction , LF i believe is low freq and maybe try bring speed up to x2 iMO

Strake
Is that hull strake close to being in front of the transducer? If so that will be your problem as it needs clean water across the face of it to work properly. In my opinion it needs to be a little lower as well. If too high then you have turbulent water from the trailing edge of the hull.
