Took the kids out whale watching in Dunsbourough last week.
Cant get much better than this close encounter.
They hung around and under the boat for 15 mins. Kids were shit scared at first then they relaxed to enjoy the experience.
Before you ask the whales came to us. Motor off and we could not move until they decieded they had enough playing with us.
Can I get a fish Id on the sounder shot please. Laughs!!!!!!!!

i had a similar expereince out off dunsborough a few weeks back! they hung round for at least half hour just frolicking around the boat then when we moved back to the spot they came back under the boat and just circled us!! didnt get the sounder read like that though!! very nice!! big fish at that spot!

Pretty cool just driftin with motors off, silence when one breaches and blows right next to you, scares the shit out of ya. People pay money to see that. Reckon the head is to the left and the tail upright on the right?

Amazing stuff
People pay hundreds of dollars to go whale watching but this takes the prize for a real close encounter. Fantastic sounder shot there but you wouldn't want one surfacing too close to your boat.
They are such majestic creatures and any time you can get that close to them, is surely something to remember...I've only seen a couple while I've been out fishing but they were no closer than 100m and that blew me away.
I'm sure you and your kids will be talking about this for some time, well done.
