sounder pic. Your thoughts?
Submitted by joe m on Mon, 2013-06-17 13:00
Hey guys, ive been using the hds now for few months and loving it. Took this pic on my phone for your thoughts. What are we seeing? Is it schooling fish or few bigger fish ect ect... Fished for around 2 hours landing 6 dhuies 5 larger sized sambos and a few smaller species. Was fishing on anchor and sounder lit up as such for majority of time. Cheers in advance

Sorry Tim-o just removed pic
Sorry Tim-o just removed pic after being told there is a program people are using to ping GPS positions with pics taken from iPhones. A big middle finger goes out to the scum that would do this! What's the world comming to. Things like this is why I have been keeping low profile and will continue to do so. Sorry guys

Ways around it
Hey Joe (always wanted to say that!) there is an easy way around that issue. If you bring the photo up on your computer, and then use the "Snipping Tool" program to get a screen image and save as a .jpg file. Then you have a nice copy of the image, without any of the background data of GPS locations etc.
Shame that you have to do all this, but hey, that's technology for ya.

Geo tagging
Easy to fix on iPhone mate.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset Location & Privacy. Then launch the Camera App, select "Don't Allow" when prompted.
You can also turn this off: Settings>Privacy>Location Services>Camera>Off.
Post away!!

Yeah +1
Turn location settings off for photos.
cannot see the need for it.
I teach teenagers cyber safety and show them their incorrect privacy settings are allowing any nut to be able to find their address and location of their bedroom.
with location settings off no need to worry about posting pics and having location discovered.

Sports camera bought from
Sports camera bought from office works for $79, waterproof to 30m. Got it attached to a roll of brickies string. The clip position is adjustable so the angle can be changed. Mounted to a 10 buck trolling hydro plane. I figure it should stay in one direction when drifting over ground or just in the current because of the hydro plane. The sinker and the links are removable so it can be used as its original intended purpose for trolling (tested and works good) so I can watch tailor smash the lures. I have fitted a ring underneath so I could attach a bait or lure too. Records to a mini sd card. Can remove card and fit to a laptop or portable player if you want to view whilst out there. I hadnt even seen a Troll Pro from the USA before I made that, they mount their camera on the same hydro plane! My mate has these cameras attached to downrigger balls and has awesome footage when he trolls live baits. Sambos, tuna, macks etc hittn the fish.

I dont have an iphone, but what if you edit the original photo, could you still ping the gps coordinates?

check
can always check when you look at the properties. When I first found out about this I pannicked and deleted a few of my photos off forums that had coordinates attached. When I then checked the coordinates I didnt find any that were actually that close to where I took the photo.
You can check this yourself ie turn your location services on and take a photo in your boat in the driveway and email it to yourself, then check the properties GPS coordinates and type them into your boat GPS or navionics app on your phone. I dont know if its just me but I am usually anywhere from 500m - 2km out of wack.
Has anyone elese had the same result as me?

you'll probably find that its
you'll probably find that its cos one is a decimal position and the other is degrees minutes seconds. The GPS is very accurate.
for example 28.34'30"S is the same as 28deg34.5S
ie 30 seconds of latitude is the same as 1/2 a minute of Lat.
If any of the minor digits are over .59 then its a decimal position
To convert a decimal position (say 28.30.759S) to imperial multiply the decimal part .759 by .6 =28deg 30'45.54".
Most GPS give you the option to display either way, some like my old Navman only one way.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Here is a pic of my 587 taken with the iphone, and used 'snipping tool' (Which is a windows 7 standard application). Takes all of 3 seconds to do. Sorry about quality of picture, this was from the original picture, not the re-sized one.
What does everyone make of this?

GPS data
I just put together and posted a quick guide on how to remove all hidden data on photos in both Windows and MAC for anyone interested!! It's a much easier way to do it than using Snipping tool especially if you've got a whole stack of photos to do.

Hey Tim-O. I would love to see some images from that camera next to your sounder screen. That would make a great post! (GPS coords removed of coarse!)

Gain doesn't appear to high
Gain doesn't appear to high given most of the clutter it is in the 20m mark and not down the bottom, maybe back it off a tad but no more otherwise you may miss fish on the bottom - personally I'd leave it as is.
No fish showing but doesn't mean there not there (disclaimer just in case you bagged out on the spot).
67.9m deep
Bottom is hard and either flat (and the bumps are due to waves) or slightly undulating (if glass calm).
Bodie when looking for bottom fish (Duhies etc) next time set your top range at 40m and bottom at 80m (for that depth) you'll find your sounder will display more info (zoom doesn't work as well in this regards). Also you can have the gain as you had and you won't see the clutter (at 20m) on the screen.
Cheers Paul

Thanks Fellas, appreciate the comments. Am still very new to reading and understanding the Furuno.
I didnt bother turning down the gain as the bottom came up fairly clear. I run gain at 10 most of the time, as i dont get that much interference.
And yes, we did bag out on this spot, Dhu's, Baldies, as well as BB's and Red throat's. (It was hookups within seconds of hitting the bottom)
I was reading the bottom as hard coraly bottom. There is a ledge very close to here which rises about 3m but not in this sounder shot. We caught the fish off the ledge.

Bodie your gain is way to
Bodie your gain is way to high for that depth. For 60 odd metres you should only be setting the gain to around 4. If its too high you'll see a lot of shit that's a waste of time.
Get rid of the bottom zoom and change it to bottom lock set on 5 metres. Also change your range on the right hand side to around 30m and use shift so the bottom is just in your view.
The way you have it set up isn't getting the best out of the sounder. Start using bottom lock and once you get it sussed it will become very handy. Bottom zoom is crap.

I have started playing with
I have started playing with the bottom lock feature just recently. A Little different to read but getting there.
Will try the gain lower and take a few pictures to show the results.

Sounder pic
Hi Paul would like to hear your thoughts on why the gain setting (10) is not high on a furuno ???
I have found there is a fine line on furunos where any more gain doesn't result in any more useful info just clutter you'll find it's probably around say 8 but say 7 you may miss info or 8.5 will be too much . Hope this makes sense ??
This is all depth depending too , and agree too go with the bottom lock and range function ( which you have )..
Cheers fishfish

I have a Lowrance HD rather
I have a Lowrance HD rather than a furno so my comments on the gain strength were based only on the picture above (i'm now assuming furno gain is number 1-10). Realistically I don't think the pic is that cluttered but I wouldn't suggest turning it any higher. Sure probably turn it down a touch to clean it up a little but idealy you want the gain or sensitivity as high as possible respective to the different water sediment levels/depths.
If furno gain is 1-10 then yep that is high and I'd say the water would have to be pretty clear or free of sediment. Still if that's what you reading turn it down to 8-9 to clean it up slightly and away you go. Agree only fine tuning would be required at most.
If your screen has no clutter at all first thing I would do is turn up my gain/senstivity untill I had a small amount of clutter near the surface, I'd probably shoot for a touch less than above though - other settings aside this should be around the best setting for picking up fish on the bottom in 30m+range. If your looking for bottom fish/structure at 60m, clutter in the 1-25m range would not be of much concern if you know to ignore it and I would have more chance of picking up fish on the bottom where your looking for something showing a decent return.
Cheers

gain
Whoa nelly that is some high gain. I usually use between 3 to 4.5 upto 90m and tvg on low (1kw). If I used more gain than that then I reckon it shows a lot more than whats actually there. I personally probably wouldnt drop on that ground in your pic Bodie, my guess is that would be soft coral/weedy sponge gardens with not much fish life in that particular shot. Looks like the right sort of ground for a look around on, but with the gain that high I wouldn't believe what it was actually telling me.
