Removing GPS Data from Photos

Hey guys thought I would put up a quick guide on how to easily remove any hidden EXIF data from your photos before uploading so you dont have to worry about accidentally posting GPS points and other info that can be hidden within your images!!

Windows has a built in feature to easily remove all EXIF data while MAC users will need to download some free software to remove the data.

For PC:

1.

Browse to the folder that holds the images you would like to remove the data for and select the photos. If you have a lot of photos in the folder and would like to select them all easily you can hold Ctrl on the keyboard and press A to quickly select all files in the  folder. If you want to just select particular files you can hold Ctrl and click on each image you want to select. You can also drag a box around them with your mouse any method is fine so long as you're happy that all the photos you want to modify are highlighted.

2.

Once you are happy you have selected the photos you would like to remove the data from simply right click on one of the photos and select  'Properties' which should be the last option on the menu that pops up when you right click.

At this stage your screen should look something like this:

3.

After clicking 'Properties' you should have a box pop up with several tabs accross the top, you will be on the General tab. What you want to do is click the 'Details' tab and you should see a screen like this listing all the hidden EXIF data on those images:

At the very bottom of the box you can see there's an option in blue to 'Remove properties and personal information'. Click on this and you should get another box that opens looking like this:

From here you have a few options on how to remove the data. You can leave it on the initial setting of 'Create a Copy with all possible Properties removed' and click Ok which will make copies of all the photos in the same folder with no hidden data or you can select 'Remove the following Properties from this File' which will allow you to scroll through the info and remove just certain fields.

I find the cleanest way is to select 'Remove the following Properties from this File' and then choose 'Select All' in the bottom right corner before clicking 'Ok'. This will remove all hidden info without creating copies of the photos so you're not ending up with doubles of all photos which also removes the risk of accidentally uploading the original images instead of the copy.

And that's it, you're done! You can double check it worked by selecting the 'Properties' of one of the photos, selecting the 'Details' tab and scrolling through the list of info there to make sure the data has been removed.

For MAC users:

Mac users will need to use some software to remove the data, I have found that ImageOptim is a really simple tool to achieve this and is free software. It also has the added benefit of reducing the file size ready for upload to the internet all in one easy hit.

Just head to imageoptim.com/ and select download. Install and run the program.

To use it all you need to do is drag the photos that you want to remove the EXIF data from into the box and ImageOptim will take care of removing the hidden data and compressing the file size.

The process should look something like this:

How accurate are they (the iphone). What about people that you take out for the day and they photo their fish. Do you think they would rush home to get the GPS spots? Probably not an issue unless you are anchored or there is no drift......Sunday would have been a good opportunity...DOH!!

Iphones are very accurate. I have used them as back up to our nav system when doing surveys at work because they have the added advantage of being able to take a photo and plot it with a GPS track in navionics

Thanks for the easy to follow instructions catch.fish

Correct me if I am wrong but all the smart phones with cameras and GPS and even digital cameras with GPS wont log any coordinates if the GPS function is turned off right?

No probs guys, and yeah Buz if the GPS or Camera Location Services is turned off it shouldn't log any coordinates - you can always double check the image to be sure by just having a look in that details tab as above. If you scroll down the details list there's a field for Long / Lat and Alt so as long as that's not there at all or empty you're safe!

Another good way to make double sure there is no unwanted hidden info in your pics is to go to exifdata.com and upload the image. That site will list absolutely all info hidden in the file so as long as there are no coords listed you're 100% safe.
