Hi guys
I have planned a trip to south lsland New Zealand for 2 weeks and will be sneaking a couple light flick rods in the back pack. I will be mainly targeting small fish from the shore both freshwater and saltwater. What sort of fish would l be in the best chance of catching and what type of tackle and lures should l bring? Also do you need a license to fish from the shore over there? Any advice
Thanks in advance

Caution fishing fresh
They have an invasive algae and you may not be permitted to bring the gear home if you use it there.....I know boots and line both pose real issues WE DONT WANT IT HERE

You don't need a license
You don't need a license there for salt water fishing but you do for fresh water. They are easy and inexpensive. For fresh water you will be better getting some of the local jigs or flies from where you get your license. They will be more than happy to help.

As a non-resident you have 2
As a non-resident you have 2 options with a freshwater licence, $163 for the season (Valid from 1/10/2016 to 30/09/2017) or $20 a day.

We had success on trout there last year on Berkley Gulp 3 inch minnows in Watermelon Pearl on 1/4 oz jig heads and also on Tassie Devil lures.
If you are going to be in Moeraki (east coast of south island), I would recommend jumping on board Moeraki Charters, cost was $110 (may have gone up now), left at 6 am and returned around 1 pm. Heaps of fish, blue cod, terahki and sea perch, all great eating.
As sunshine said, they do have an algae problem in some waters. We had no problem bringing our fishing gear back home though, they just wanted to know when it was last used and if it was clean.
Fantastic place, the local food and red wine is great, and the kiwis themselves are pretty good too.
We plan on heading back next year to do the north island.
