Southwind SF655 flooring
Submitted by DesignDude on Sat, 2016-11-26 07:09
Wondering if anyone has experience with the build of Southwind SF655 (2002 model) Recently bought one that has soft spot in floor port side about metre from the stern. Part of the floor seems to have a bubble that is solid underneath when pushed but just behind that and along port side edge theres a spot feeling really soft about 300mm long. Not sure what's under the floors in those boats. Didnt pick it up when looking at it to purchase :-( and now would like to fix.

I have a Southwind sf500 and so did a mate of mine and both ours had the same issue, common problem.
is your deck wood? If so there's screws holding it down, lift them up you might need to re fiberglass the supports.

I've just bought a southern
I've just bought a southern star sc640 (same as the southwind) and it recently had the rear deck and transom rebuilt. Not sure of the process but it was an expensive repair.

A Sothern star
Wouldn't be that old so disappointing! rain is the enemy for fiberglass boats gets in under the floor and rots them out. A lot of builders don't glass under the floor. If it were me I would take it to Greg at GT fiberglass for an assessment. Not sure if insurance will cover you. And keep it under cover.A boat cover is a must for a fiberglass boat.

The boat is only 10yrs old
The boat is only 10yrs old but I was told it sat outside for 4yrs without being used in townsville. It was under full storm covers so it was like a steam oven.

I've got a Southwind sf640
I've got a Southwind sf640 that is currently getting a full transom and flooring rebuild. 13 years old, everything is completely rotten. It seems they used non marine ply and not a lot of care when it came to sealing the floor

Hey Jackalchup, I know ur post is a few years old but I have a southwind sf655 (cuddy cabin). You couldn't happen to shed some light on the transom configuration could u. I suspect there may be a little softness in the transom but I put in a new Lowrance today and had to drill a hole through the transom into the right rear tank ... it was solid glass.
could u shed some light on where they used the ply in the transom at all pls?
cheers

Jack thats shit
A lot of fiberglass boats have sealed floors so you cant inspect. Just have to know what to look for when buying. But if you know a boats history and if it sat outside in the rain uncovered you can guarantee there will be rot. But the build quality of some of these is disappointing to say the least.

Rotten floor
NTh QLD is one of the worst places for rotten trailer boats Raun and humidity create moisture in the hulls this just ends up rotting out internals. I ran my boat buildung business in Cairns and lost count of how many rebuild we did in boats under the age of 10 years.
if your boat has a gelcoat liner it could be delaminated from the timber hard to tell with out cutting the floor up.
