Spark plug recommendations.

 Hi guys.

Just found out that the previous owner of my boat has been using incorrect plugs for the Johnson outboard. The plugs thats in the outboard are NGK BZ9HS-10.  The correct plugs should be Champion QL78YC. Based on google, some people are using the NGK equivalent which are BZ8HS-10. Have found mixed online feedback for using Champion vs NGK.  Champion plugs cost more than the NGK equivalent, $35 (for 4) as opposed to $20 (for 4) for the NGKs.

Which do you think I should buy and use??

Spark plugs

hey mate I used to sell motor vehicle spare parts and Ngk was the preferred brand but saying that a spark plug is a spark plug it's like ford vs Holden everyone has their preference.

The difference between a BZ8HS and a 9 is only slight difference in heat range (can't remember if 8 is hotter or colder than 9) and it won't make massive difference th the performance of the engine.

Thanks for that info mate. The plugs were changed in April last year so I'll buy a new set of 8HS and see how it goes.

The extra $15 is not the issue. I just want to use the best plugs for the outboard. Even "maxrules" website (well known US outboard specialists) recommends NGK.

As stated there are many different feedback online (mostly in the US) with regards to which plugs are best for v4 outboards, hence why Im asking here, coz we all know FW members knows best! Haha

Anyhow, any members here running Johnson/Evinrude 2 stroke v4 outboards, please let me know what plugs youre using?

The outboard is a mid 80s Johnson v4 120hp. Still goes very well for its age. Haha!

Thanks for the link.  Will research a bit more on the plugs.

heat ranges

Wed, 2015-06-17 21:15

With NGK, the higher the number the colder the plug, so an 8 is hotter than a 9. Spark plug quality in the basic ranges from all manufacturers now is pretty ordinary, not all that unsual to have them fail out of the box. I only use Iridium in all my motorbikes now for that reason--performance is no different in the older/lower tuned ones, but they will last. As for outboards, I'll leave that to the mechanic.
