water under deck

Just wondering what others would do in my predicament.

we have recently bought a boat (Fraser fly-bridge). apart from interior repair its in good nick. however, today i decided to check out an area i was getting water seepage in, appears that the edge of the floor in the cabin has worn and needs to be repaired, no big deal, however i decided to take the pipe work out of the boat that is for a toilet, we don't have one so don't need that pipe, however i noticed water in the floor. decided to soak it up. this got me thinking, the front of the cabin has no storage, so cannot see if all is dry, so after messing around i managed get some rope down between where the pipe as mentioned above went through the panels, pulled it out and its wet. it looks like its mainly seeped down from the anchor well, there is slight damage in there where the coating has been broken, and underneath was wet after the rains.

the boat has one bung, this bung leads to an under floor storage area that has solid sides, this is where they have installed a bilge. where the fuel tank is i have installed another bilge as this area also had water in it when we got it, not much and possibly from the rains we had, and again all solid sides.

so what would you do in terms of the water that i cant physically get to? i don't know where under the deck the foam lies for floatation.

i have a couple of scenarios i could do, but before i go about doing one of them i wanted to see others thoughts on this, maybe someone else has had same problem.

From top,

the boat

transom with one bung

fuel tank fully encased with side walls

where toilet was, the hole goes into the hull where i have no way to look inside

floor in cabin where i found seepage

rear storage

rear storage where bung hole is located, again fully enclosed compartment

Boats above either 6 or 7 meters do not need to have positive bouyancy (foam) built in, not sure how big yours is though

Cant see the pics, easier to load tham to your original post by "edit"

Salt or freshwater? Could you

Salt or freshwater? Could you cut some inspection ports in under those cushions for access?

Maybe try sealing the anchor well drain with tape on the outside of the hull and fill with water and see if it empties through the liner into the front compartments.

not sure if salt or fresh, i

not sure if salt or fresh, i know some will be from the heavy rains a few weeks back, as the cushions were dry prior.

yes i was thinking, one option was to cut out an inspection hole, kind of similar way to the underseat storage but not as big whereby i can lift cover off to have a look. maybe also install a bilge into that area also.

I have purchased fibreglass tape, which should do the trick in sealing along the edge in the well, though i will probably have to get someone out to advise if the underside (which is wood and has not been coated) is able to be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.

I was also thinking of adding 2 bungs, one either side of the storage, my smaller boat has 3, which is what gave me this thought.

on top of that i have been thinking about putting in a couple of inspection ports mid way, just prior to the cupboards and seats, though that said this could be over kill.

i have been trying to find info on these boats but no luck, technically with the high sides she should stay pretty much dry, that said i dont know what water she would struggle in out in the drink, but if i can repair all cracks and re-seal all fittings on the outside of the boat she should be ok.

Can't tell you where it is

Can't tell you where it is getting in but I would be concerned using any boat that leaked - even if it is from rain etc, at a guess I would say you don't have floatation foam but who knows who put in what in the boats history.  Anchor well and all deck hatches should fully seal so no water can get into the hull proper - my advice would be to sort this out and whilst putting in a bilge pump does work its only a temporary fix and only works as long as the bilge can pump (power supply failure/interruptions/ blockages/ auto switches can be prone to failure etc.) - will need to put inspection holes in.

Otherwise looks like a good boat

Im not that concerned, the

Im not that concerned, the boats 1990, its not exactly full of water, and tbh no boat stays completely dry.

that said, I took it down to a local today, he checked the boat out and gave me great advice, as well as telling me the fraser has a superb hull, one of the best built (bonus), gave me great info all round.

So after a good ol chin wag, we decided, to cut out a looking hole in the front seat inside the cabin, same as what we have for the seat storage, just a little smaller. then to install a bung either side of the rear under floor storage, inside near as possible to the transom, this will then allow air flow, and also allow any water to find it way out. and as for a bilge pump, I will add another bigger pump in the floor storage rigged up separately to the other.

so job for tomorrow :)
