Spot Etiquette

So I went out fishing 2 weeks ago with a mate and my GPS died on the way out so I had to navigate with my limited knowledge of the area and the markers around Hillarys and found some decent looking ground near the south cardinal marker. By lining up some landmarks I was not only able to find the lump again but managed to anchor up and get right over the top of it after a few drifts.

About 5 mins after we had anchored up and started to send out a berley trail of mulie cubes a huge dive boat pulled up and anchored no more than 150m away from us right where our berley trail was going and started diving.

My theory was along the lines of, oh well we were here 1st and if you decide to dive where bits of dead fish are floating past it's on you. That being said it was absent minded of me to throw a wrasse frame I had just killed and filleted in the water only to watch it float on the surface straight toward the divers.

It's a pretty big frigging ocean, surely the dive boat could have gone to another of the thousands of bits of reef in the area as there were stuff all boats around that day.

Bugger, I'm pretty new to ocean fishing in a boat and didn't even think to look to see if I was near anyone's 'spot'. Would it be in my GPS like the FADs are?

Maybe he was dropping his clients into my berley trail on purpose so tehy would all see fish and give him positive reviews.

the whale shark boats up at Exmouth they will literally

drop divers right on top of you and then ask you to move because

they have people in the water!

Mate who's never been fishig

Fri, 2016-02-05 07:15

Mate who's never been fishig before caught this horse KGW and a nice lil blackarse and a scorpion fish. I only caught a Port Jackson and wrasse for bait but got onto a few hezza once we moved over to Little Island to finish up on some squid.

Dive boats

Fri, 2016-02-05 05:36

The guys on the dive boat are probably using that area, and have been using it for years, because it would be easy for them to anchor/retrieve, safe for the divers (no deep holes for inexperienced divers to get into trouble) and has some nice looking cave or swimthrough. They do it 2-3 times a week and really wouldnt give a toss if you were berlying up as its not them in the water. 150m away should not have spooked any of your fish as most divers on a charter are novices and they are happy to get to bottom, find a nice blue damsel fish and stay put.

If it was some of the diving FW members then that is another story because they would have sat in your burley trail and speared the best ones coming up it..lol

Hope you got a feed anyway.

Yeah mate I wasn't bothered

Fri, 2016-02-05 07:18

Yeah mate I wasn't bothered by it as I kept doing what I was doing and they seemed happy enough. I was more concerned about the trail of dead fish I was sending their way with them in the water (not enough to stop mind you). Just found it strange they'd sit so close when there was no one else around but your comment about nice reef for begginner divers makes sense.

150m is close?

Fri, 2016-02-05 07:20

I doubt your berley is effective at 150m. Given you couldn't cast 150m from the boat what difference does it make? If your berley does drift 150m then you are probably taking fish away from your location. You want your berley to hang around at the boat to attract the fish to you.

The GPS? F'n tell me about it

Fri, 2016-02-05 07:59

The GPS? F'n tell me about it mate. Luckily I had already ordered an external GPS puck for the unit which came the day after the internal GPS died and she's all up and running again. Should get me through until I get a couple of other things done on the boat and I can turn my attention to dehumminbirding my boat altogether.

What plotter do you run alongside your Furuno?
