Squid outfit

With the squid competition over which I was not able to attend due to family commitments I was wondering what is everyone's favourite squid outfit whether it be a top range outfit or a kmart combo

my two would be my

Daiwa emeraldas 2506 reel and daiwa saltiga ocean jigger 6'6 rod

Daiwa Luvias 2500 reel and daiwa redback 6'6 rod

but i think a cheap combo will do the job as long as you have an effective lure. Ever since Brenz sold me a few top of the woozer lures i am convinced that quality lure in the right colours outfishes any cheapies 5 to 1 - proved it in fact over several sorties.

Good squid jig and a $2 handline cant go wrong!  Would rather spend the money on the jigs rather than a rod.

very whippy and wont catch anything bar a squid, Tiny Okuma 1000 type egi-beater, braid, flouro leader and "the most expensive jig you can lay your hands on". Notice how the price increase the further toward the squid you go. Crap rod, crap reel, better line, expensive leader and crazy priced jig.

Catches squid!

Tue, 2009-05-19 17:23

Is there any hard and fast rule for which colour you opt for dependent on what the weather is like? Do you go a lighter jig in brighter conditions? A green jig always on a Thursday? or do you just keep rotating them until you start to get some action?

Like I said on the other post. Go longer rods for casting distance, it'll be easier to work the jigs when they far out as well.

Already got the reels I want, maybe a Stella 2500S or C3000S later on.

Egi Force Type B 8"3' and Emeralda 2506

Egi Forec Type B 8"9'  and Certate Finesse 2506

Jigs?? I got over 100 to choose from and will be getting more soon.

GLADIATOR Egi Equip rods

Wed, 2009-05-20 08:08

Hi All

We do three rods in our EGI Equip series. The are 7'2", 8'1" and 8'10". All the rods have been designed by expert Japanese squid fishermen, the actual rods that we do reatil for around $600.00 in Japan. Our rods are made from hi-modulus graphite from Japan. It is actually graphite that was earmarked for the new Airbus 380 but because of slow production times they need to offload the graphite to keep cash flow up - so I guess you can say they are made from aircraft grade graphite. They have a parabolic action to cushion any lunges from a squid ensuring you wont pull hooks from the soft flesh. If you would like to know who stocks them in WA send me a PM, Ryan will receive a couple next week so maybe drop Honsu a PM.

Cheers

most cheaper rods have a slow taper wich is good for squiding so you dont pull the jig, i find the soft plastic rods are a bit stiff for squiding (and cost a bit more), im currently building a rod atm, a cheap blank that has a slow taper and soft action 6ft to use in my boat, with fuji split camo grips and alcanite guides. reel wise using a twinpower 1000 size reel with 4lb braid. nice little reel anc keeps the weight down on the final product.

Wed, 2009-05-20 17:18

I use that "whipping" technique all the time. When you have to 60m of line out and jig 5-6m down. The "whipping" helps move the squid jig and get the squid interested in the movement. Squid jigs also do dart like a soft plastic minnow as well. Twitching is another technique I use. You imagine a prawn moving along. A prawn dont slowling swim along when he sees a squid.....he darts and bolts away!!

Wed, 2009-05-20 19:55

I might give the whipping a go,,i can see how it can work in theory and would really attract the squid as it darts everywhere,,but i can get my limit in a hour or less sometimes trolling or drifting so it makes me wonder if theres any signicant advantages in it.

I think for shore based it would be a good idea as they can't move around freely and need to attract all the attention they can.

I reckon they should give out "egi" rods out at the squid comp, Stu who won the kayak section got a very nice rod but it was not a squid rod,,it would make more sense to me to award squid rods out,,BTW he is very wrapped in his prizes, thanks to all concerned.

I didn't know squid fishing

Thu, 2009-05-21 07:50

I didn't know squid fishing can be such an expensive sport till I joined the comp heh.

Also, something I find interesting. With the squid lures, when we jig/ whip them, it's supposed to simulate a prawn darting away. But problem is prawns only dart backwards no? I only remember seeing prawns darting backwards when I had a tank back then.

Also with eyes as good as human's (I believe so?),  I'm actually intrigued as to why the squids will fall for the lures. Of course they have small brains, but I guess they can see that the prawn's actually darting forward and that it's fake?

Any squid expert mind giving an insight?

Bilby for 500 bucks you should be able to buy yourself something quite useable does not have to be top shelf to catch squid have a read of the other guys posts

you could buy yourself something like a 2500 sol with a rod to match or something cheaper at the end of the day as long as it catch's you squid thats the main thing but I will say for sure useing good quality squid jigs is a must if you really want to do well

If you want an actual squid rod, which can be used for everything else. The Egi Force Type C is only $250. They available from Oceanside in O'Connor or Tackle Shack in Malaga. At the end of the day you wouldnt use a squid rod just for squid. It makes a great plastics rod from the beach and rocks.

Bilby the emeraldas 2506

Thu, 2009-05-21 23:21

Bilby the emeraldas 2506  was designed for squidding from what a few of the jap guys told me whether that is true or not I bought it because of the good internals and paint job but any reasonable quality reel will do as wood a reasonable quality long light line rod does not have to be squid specific.unless thats what you want and you have dollars to spare have a look at the various different tackle stores talk to the guys and you will make up your mind what suits you.

I generally go for the top end gear thats just me

where as my mates use cheaper all round outfits but good quality jigs and they have no problem with their catch's

Fri, 2009-05-22 18:25

The Emeralda was not designed for just squidding. Its MARKETED as a squid reel becoz of the finesse spool, which holds only 150m of PE 0.8 or 8lb braid and yes...the fancy paintjob.

The difference between the Type B and C is the blank and guides. The B uses a higher end graphite blank which is more responsive and lighter as well as using Fuji SiC guides and tip. The Type C uses lower end guides and non Fuji reel seat.

When you're landbased there's many times the weed bank is just a big further out. Most light 7ft rod just dont cast far enough or heavy enough weight. Im now looking at getting a 9ft version for even more distance to catch them bigger ones.

There's a new Emeralda out. Called the Emeralda Colossal for them BIG ONES!! 7kg of drag and eva POWER knob. Google THAT!!

The Gekka...is a light rock reel for catching them little rock fish/cod things in Japan. Also suitable for squidding but only comes in smaller 2000 size.

To be honest any finesse reel with smooth drag is good enough. Heck my mate uses a Stella 2500FD

Having swapped the pilbara

Sun, 2009-08-09 09:57

Having swapped the pilbara for bayside Melbourne I'm looking to get into the smaller spinning gear. If I ever do find someone with a boat then I'm happy using my existing big baitrunner, tld-15 etc for the larger fish. So I am looking for the most suitable reel for pier and rock fishing, with squid as the priority. I will be purchasing an egi rod.

My query is whether a 1000 series reel suitable for the egi rods, or is the 2500 the ideal match? Most people seem to be advocating using a 2500 reel with 6lb braid. When I visited a local tackle shop over the weekend the advice was that the 2500 size reel was no-mans land, and that I should ever use a 1000 or step up to 3000, when I said I was keen on squid he recommended a Daiwa 1000 matched to a Daiwa rod with 6lb braid.

I would very much appreciate feedback from your expertise.

HI Brett Welcome to the

HI Brett
Welcome to the forum and may the force be with you....as you may need it for Melbourne fishing...lol JK

Its really horses for courses. We use the longer, 8ft+, rods simply cos it can cast further and help cover more ground. They're generally matched to 2500 size reels to balance up the extra length.

What the shop recommended is still good, you'll probably dont need long rods for casting distance, hence the smaller reel. The larger reel also helps pickup line quicker as you go through the jerking technique. I disagree 2500 reel been no-mans land type of reel. There are still a need for 2500 size reel. Infact, most people in the eastern states run 2500 size reel for when they are chasing bigger fish as well. It has the extra line capacity and line retrieve rate.

Again horses for courses. If the outfit feels like a balance outfit then thats all you need. If casting distance is an issue then go for a longer rod and bigger reel.

thx for the quick follow-up, much appreciated :)

Back in 2003 I went on a chart in Port Phillip bay with a group of mates. Amongst the 150 undersize flathead caught and thrown back that, I
rather nonchalantly pulled in a 12lb snapper which at the time I thought was rather ho hum by Pilbara standards. But even the charter operator was semi-hysterical as the fish was landed. A

At that point I realised I'd should have made more of my time in the Pilbara :) And I started selling my biggest gear off on e-bay.

But now with a couple of mad keen kids I'm keen to take up some pier angling again. Pls PM rme e the Egi Rod, I spoke to one of your guys last Monday (Not Ryan who I spoke to on the Sunday) and he was going to call me back re air-freight options. I may have given a wrong number

Regards

Dave

But spending the extra $$ for quality definitely improved my catch rate.

Just recently picked up a new rod and 8lb braid from Oceanside and had better results instantly.

Spending the $$ has helped my technique, helped me feel the jig way better and i'm enjoying myself way more.

Tax returns are awesome lol
