as a general rule look for weed beds then cast your jig over it anf let it sink to near the bottome then lift the rod once or several in short sharp tugs, let the jig fall again near the bottom. youll get the hang of how deep it is and you can keep the jig near the bottom long and get a better chance.
if you are doing this from a boat you can just drift over the weed beds and lift the rod ever now and again. but make shore you keep it off the bottom a fair bit so u doing get weed on it because squid wont touch the jig if it has weed on it. and also so you dont lose your jigs.

This may be the dumbest thing some of you have heard, but how do you know your on a weed bed? Being a diver I normally avoid them like the plague.

Thanks Danno,
i'm, in Rockingham and fish from a boat. I have caught most of my squid by trolling at idol. Usually over the Southern flats in about 3m of water. Can you do squidding in deep water?

you can but the squid out
you can but the squid out there are few and far between. if you see some squid throw a jig and they will normaly eat it no worries. the best thing to do is google squidding in wa or something like that and it will come up with a fair bit of useful info but it will also just not so helpful info to.
but bye far the best was to learn is to practise and see wat is workin for you.
do u use cheap or expensive jigs?
cheers danno

I was using cheap jigs but bought a yozuri a couple of weeks ago and have had instant success. My mate and i both had similar coloured jigs out the back and i was up 9-1......i won't be going back to the cheapies. I'll go and have a chat with Phil and Mark at Camping World next week...local boys...local knowledge.
Thanks for the tips Danno....i think overall i am doing the right things....just need to find where the squid are now......bit more reading to do...appreciated.

The more expensive jigs have a better swim. They have better jags. They have better under colour. They are made of better material.
Sure, you will catch squid on cheap jigs. More and more people as they see the higher catches by their mates are prepared to spend a little more.
Yozuri are branded as a good jig and they are, however there is a much more diverse range of excellent squid jigs around for different situations these days that are showing excellent results and the competitions taking place will show theyre wortht heir salt.
Some tackle stores have videos in house worth a watch on squid techniques in catching more fish. Its worth asking to see the demonstration videos of the different techniques and adopting your own.

natural colours
Found best technique is to pick your jig size to your drift and water depth so the jig doesnt snag. Then just put the rods in the rod holders and kick back let the boat do the work. Natural colours in the haramitsu seem to do the job.
I actually fish.
