Used to catch em by hand

In S.A. they were a pest off some shallow rocks we used to fish (Treasure Cove at Butlers) as they were continually grabbing float rigged mulies meant for big SA snook and salmon. They were hard to hook so we adopted a slow retrieve and simply stood in a rock pool with access to the sea, would carefully drift them in and simply bend, grab and throw behind us on the rocks. Many of these squid were 1kg plus and, crazily we would only use them for bait as we hadn't discovered how good they were on the tooth.........learnt now though !!

hand caught squid

This reminds me of a time approximately 15 years ago when I was diving with two mates at Port Noarlunga reef in SA.

About half way through the dive we came upon around 5 or so squid. One of my friends managed to get quite close to one and then suddenly grabbed it in his hand. After a few moments looking at it and showing off he let go pushing the squid away. The squid turned around and spread all tenticles out towards his face alien sucker style. The squid then squited its ink and took off leaving me and our other friend watch him thrash his arms through the cloud of ink in panic.

I was laughing so hard I had to surface or I would have drowned.

The following dive I did we came across a huge cuttlefish nealy a metre long and pretty fat. We looked at eachother and though we better leave this one well alone..

Cheers

Paul
