Steep Point

Gday,

For those in the know, i might be heading to "The point" for the first time in the next couple of months..

Just a couple of Q's for people that have been there before..

Will prob be heading up somewhere between May-July? whats the fishing like then? the macks etc still around or the water temp too cold?

What heights do the cliffs range from? lowest point you can fish from to get macks/bottom species? highest points that are fishable?

Whats the beach fishing like up there?

Best lures for spinning for macks? (mack baits, cd18s, halco max etc etc...)

Best baits for ballooning and bottom fishing? (spose squid or mulies the usual?)

Any info would be really good

Cheers

Sam

leave the max at home useless as tits on a bull! take metals and plenty of them , mack baits , cd 18, and bombers in the fluro green work a treat , balooning use gardies , bottom i tend to use iqf mullies wrapped in ghost cotton and hold on . the macks should still be there but not in huge numbers although the tuna are usually plentifull u there . if your keen for macks put in the extra miles and hit quobba better platforms no crowd more macks cobia etc no hassle and if ya head to quobba ill def volentere to be an off sider hahaha

mate have fished steepy

Thu, 2008-04-03 17:46

mate have fished steepy heaps of times land based and by boat, if you have a little dinghy tow that in with you and beach launch it there is plenty of good spots in the bay where there is some massive fish, in the way of lures take heaps of steel bibed nilsmaster invincibles they are like gold up there ecspecally red heads and blue, may would be better if you want macks as in july they are few and far between you still get the odd one but you work very hard for it, not saying july is no good it fishes good for pinkies, baldies and cobia. Good luck if you decide to go

Just got back

Fri, 2008-04-04 16:36

Hey mate, just got back from up there. Was my first trip up and had a ball, apparently it was little quiet but i still managed to land 3 macks (~10kg so nothign huge), a few tuna and some pinkies (off west site).

The lures we had luck with were definately the nis master invincibles (metal bibs), the X raps and my personal favorite the Mad Mullet by lively lures, we were not having much luck at all with the mack baits or halco's. If i were to go again i would be stocking up on the Nilsies and mad mullets. For balooning either gardies or mullet, for Baldchin go collect some fresh crab from under the ledge, for pinkies use scalies if you can.

The cliff on the main fishing side where you camp is ~6meters or so, there isnt really any "beach" fishing unless your going for whiting or something. If you want to go over to the west side of Steep point (where we go for bottom fish) its about a ~20m drop i would think.

Good luck if you end up going but as Italiano said it might be a bit quiet fishing off the rocks at that time of the year.
