I dont really want to admit to this
but I snapped my cable when I forgot to pick the leg up before pulling the boat and trailer out of the water .

You will have to strip
You will have to strip down the old cable to determine the failure point and cause.
Fatigue, corrosion, wear, excessive force. All are susspects.
The first three would point to maintance issues. The later could be impact related.

i have heard
of some cables snapping if your motor is left untied on long trips and the motor is swinging in the breeze.
but this depends on how big your motor is as large motors usually dont swing as much

Was it tight?
Tight cables can break the gear in the Helm.
