Stick Baits

Thinking of heading down to Albany soon for a small holiday and thought why not go fishing as well. Wondering best hard body stick baits for salmon. I was thinking arma anchovy 50g would be good for the smaller outfits but need one for the big 13' 10-15kg surf rod. Any suggestions?

White Richter plugs best Tailor/salmon surface lure around, get creative n slap a little bit of red on the front of a couple too!

If you go to the tackle shop n there are no 2-3oz on the shelf only bigger and smaller ones or green or pink there is a reason for that lol

Where to start?

Tue, 2014-05-06 06:38

this year i've used -

Richter Plugs 1-2-3-4oz, Clone Stickbaits 2-3oz, Maria Bluescode and Bullchops, Sebile Stickshad 114, Gladiator Ocean Potion, Owner Cultiva Tango Dancer, Shimano Waxwings and various random ebay sticks.

Honestly any stickbait between 100-180mm they'll eat

Smiling Jacks

Are Good for short casts and boat use but they are very light and cast poorly.

Numerous better bibbed minnow options out there like Rapala sxr14, Halco Hamma, Dr Hook School Bully, Zipbaits Boon etc.

Personally I've found Waxwings not very effective but I know others like them.

Honestly the hardest thing about catching Salmon is finding them, the catching part is easy. But bloody good fun

Ive never liked the waxwings, as soon as you start retrieving them at "salmon and tailor speed" they just start rolling around

There salmon mate there isnt

Sun, 2014-05-11 10:58

There salmon mate there isnt many lures that wont work on them.

If you really want to catch a salmon on a lure got and get your self a white richter plug. If the salmon are around thats probably the first lure they will go for.

If you want more than 1 lure get a 40gr silver halco twistie these are also great for salmon.

And just to mix it up a bit so you look really profesional get your self a Maria Bullchop to put in your tackle box.

If you want it to be exciting catching a salmon forget the surf rod and use your bream gear/ light gear

We fished Albany over easter and between the 3 of us we caught 50-60 salmon and all of them where on a twistie or a richter plug. All mine where using the twistie on either 15lb gear or my 4lb bream gear.

Stop worrying so much about what every one else is using or doing. Nothing will work for you if you dont get out there and try.

stick baits... hrmmm... well

Tue, 2014-05-13 21:17

stick baits... hrmmm... well i recently had a trip down the albany and the fish down there would pretty much take whatever you throw at them.

i liked using the 40 gram spanyid lures, they cast out far so you can cover quite a lot of distance.

you just have to be able to cast out to where the fish are and i'm sure you'll catch them. even the herrings down there were having a go at my swivel!
