Sting ray problems

Iv been out a few times trying for something bigger off the rocks (metro area's) and i just seem to be getting hammered by stingrays. Iv tried different baits and rigs but still get the run around by the rays.

Anyone got any tips on what rigs to try and baits?

Not sure what rig you are

Not sure what rig you are using but if you have a 3 - way swivel .Try a small cork set up on your leader line at the eye of the hook. Then have a slightly longer trace to your sinker ,the bait should float up away from the bottom. Also works ok if there is a bit of weed around.

 Basically as everyone has

Basically as everyone has mentioned get it off the bottom and you are most likely never to hook up a ray again. Searching for sharks? Balloon it if possible with a good 2/3 metres of line under the balloon with a wire trace of course.

Yeah, i never thought of floating it up of the bottom. In Europe when fishing for pike they use pop up floats which you attach or insert into the dead baits, can you get them here in Australia?

its funny i thought a float

its funny i thought a float would work as well until i caught 3 in an arvo on live herring under a float. Honestly if theyre hungry enough they'll come off the bottom(usually only eagle rays as they dont mind being off the bottom) its not as common but it happens trust me, best thing you can do is keep at it and eventually after you filter through enough rays you'll hit a keeper! don't lose hope!

By the way fresh bait always helps it wont stop the hordes of rays but it will make it more tempting to that prized mully!

Don't flip them over 'cause

Don't flip them over 'cause you'll injure them internally. They do wan't to hit you with the tail so keep it down with a rod holder. Remove the barb of your hooks for starters and make yourself a tool like below (will also help with sharks)
