Carve your number into the frame, won't stop them but they'll always be wary using them

I've had my share of pots stolen from me over the years. I now have my licence number welded on the steel base frame in the hope that if they are stolen one day the DoF might pull it and see the new float number is different from the number on the pot frame...we live amongst bastards unfortunatly.

Carve

Better to carve your rego numbers in the top frame above where the rope ties to the pot, that way who ever is on the winch will notice it because thats where he is going to place his hand when he pulls it off the tipper.

marking the pots

Wed, 2013-03-20 11:46

yes good idea, and will do thatin future with the two new pots i have bought.Am also welding the rego on the metal plates.Fisheries department said that this will be a new requirement in the near future, they  are also looking into a security seal attached to each pot. If seal doesnt match or has been removed pots will be taken by the fisheries.

Taken or busted off?  As a diver, I see lots of pots with long ropes busted off. Although there are plenty of pricks around, its not always the case

Wed, 2013-03-20 12:16

No they were taken,I am a diver too,i went straight over the side.I have had friends pots being stolen from divers!! then they tied the ropes to the reef!!Nice trick hey. No sorry to say these pots had been in the same location for several weeks and got me a good number of crays ,why wouldnt you leave them in the location? Just the people that took them must have pulled them before.as the day they were taken both pots were over 300 mtres appart. But in the same reef location area. Happy diving.

Thats a prick losing your pots or having them pulled. We have changed to pro pots and have found that they done get pulled as often as they are bloody heavy. take them out of the water once the crays start coming in close as thats when you get them pinched.

If your pots are being pulled then contact fisheries, if enough people report and there is a pattern or an area that pots are being pulled, then fisheries can and will target that area.

Brand your pots, weld your number onto the base and if your pots are being pulled or tampered with then report it.

Note that if you dont have enough weight in the base of your pot, currents can move your pots, we have had pots move 300m over night and thought they had been pulled, only to find them full of crays.

This is to anyone that pulls or tampers with other peoples pots, if fisheries catch you you run the risk of losing your car and boat plus a nice fine.

If the owner catches you, then you may well wish that fisheries got you instead.

I agree with all you have said and yes know pots move in rough seas and currents.trouble with taking matters into your own hands the next minute you are up for assult.

RE: taken or busted off

Wed, 2013-03-20 11:25

was out in a mates boat a few weeks ago and went over ( leg caught) one just before dawn.  We were in probably 30-35m of water and there was 50-60m.

YES 50-60m of rope along the surface.  We saw the float and were about 40m away.....still hit the rope.   usually drive up water from the floats for this reason but was just so many around.   FWIW the the rope trailed along the surface to close the where the next float was ! so there wasn't much margin for error

are there any regulations for amount of rope / water depth.  etc? .....seemed dangerous to have so much rope out for the water depth
