Submitted by TheJettyRat on Sat, 2013-03-09 23:56
Has anyone had any decent amout of joy with the tailor in the past two weeks ? They have gone off the chew big time on the jetty ( except for the beginning of the jetty choppers but they don't count )

There have been a few around
There have been a few around in the 40's but they havn't been around in big numbers I have found, we were bagging out earlier in the season but are having to work hard to find them at the moment. Which half of the jetty were you on ? We have been working the first half over the past few nights and finding a few there but have had not much joy on the second half over the past two weeks becides the odd 50+cm.

We were at the very end
We were at the very end Jetty Rat, almost up against the fence of the UWO, jeez a 50+ cm would be great! honest they were really chasing up the baitfish and hitting the mulies hard,
then dropped off the bite and hour after dark, a few fish around our troop were caught also, they too looked to be 40cm+

using unweighted mulie? i
using unweighted mulie? i caught the larger one using the remaining top half of a pike that got smashed on its way up, it wasnt out long at all.
i am definatly keen to land a 50+ one now that you've mentioned you have had some success out there,
do they continue through winter? ( understand the choppers die off) how bout the largers one?

Sounds like you got the
Yep unweighted mulie, Sounds like you got the method down there, just keep fishing like you have been and if a 50 comes past it should smash your line. At the moment you may be better off useing baits such as snook and yellowtail since there arn't many tailor about and mulies are $$, use the milies conservatively. They do like the snook that is for sure, the herring go ape over them too.

tailor
I was down yallingup way over the weekend with some visiting relatives and managed to get out fishing a few times.....
We managed 3 good salmon around the ~60-65cm mark, a tailor at 51cm and plenty of herring on the first night, second and third nights stacks of herring, tailor of 35-40 (only one per night) a black ray the size of a car bonnet and some tarwhine (these were all from near eagle bay). Then did a quick spin session off yallingup reef on Saturday morning and only managed 1 little tailor in an hours spinning with amazing conditions....it seemed really quiet for tailor the whole weekend but the smallies made up for it and I didn't expect salmon to be so prevalent on the first night.

Super Peg the pike are out
Super Peg the pike are out most of the day, i liked using minnow lures or small metals. Work them about half your top speed, they should be crawling all over the lures. One more thing i learnt when i was down there in january, avoid chasing tailor on days when the sea breeze is weak, i found that the trumpeter were everywhere and cleaned up the baits before the tailor and herring had a chance.

Reports Coming In
Getting a few reports of salmon being caught down in Eagle Bay. I wont know for sure until the weekend when I'll get a chance to go down there but it's sounding as though some schools are travelling through.

the Pro's
The commercial guys were seen chasing a school on the west coast this week so it's a little more than just resident fish. Lets hope it's the start of a good salmon season.

Went down around injidup on
Went down around injidup on Saturday to try for some salmon. Middle of the day middle of the tide, 2 tailor 50 and 55cm and my first mulla, sized by about 5mm- still claiming it. Lucky day
Fisherman, constantly trying to out-smart fish.......with limited success
