Strap your boat down

Heading home from the ramp on Thursday I was involved in a rear ender with another car.

Glad I had the boat tied down, otherwise reacon it could have ended up a car toper !

The boat shifted just over half a meter and took paint off where the straps ran over the hull, but better than having it in the back of the car - and this was after breaking at only about 50 km.h !

No mater how big or small your boat is and how good it rides on the trailer, braking suddenly and coming to an abrupt stop means that boat has to go somewhere over your rollers, and that somewhere will be in a forward direction.

Every time from now on when the boat leaves the driveway, the strap will be on.

cheers,

Paul

Sheesh Paul - could have been a lot worse mate! I reckon if it wasn't for the straps, you could have been looking at a snapped winch post, not just a bent one!

Definitely Colin.

I know the boat and car are insured, but for under $50 the straps are worth their weight in gold !

And like I said, this was a low speed accident. I'd hate to see the effects at a higher speed.

Fish today.....work tomorrow !  (when the trailer and car gets fixed  Wink)

Yeh a very good reminder kaney. As mentioned previously in another post, it spins me out how many ppl dont use a transom strap for their boat!

I wonder

Whilst you may well be right, perhaps it's because the winch post is set up (including strength) 'just' to winch the boat, rated for the rollered or skid pad weight (not lift weight) of the boat - by the way they are offset forwards.

Put a bracing on the other side, but that would cause issues with the tongue end of the trailer.
