Sunday at Rotto

Went for a run out the back off Rottnest chasing tuna schools last Sunday in near perfect conditions, apart from a few fast moving fish in close on the south west side of the island it was pretty quiet plus all the floating weed was making it difficult . Decided to bottom fish and sounded around in 40/50 metres, after a bit of exploring for a good hour trying to understand how my new FCV 620 Furuno works properly ( heaps to learn) found a great fluctuation and set up for a drift which yielded 2 nice dhuies both around 6-7kg plus a just undersize pinky. It was so calm I could not resist going out further towards the closest FAD approx 10km away. Noticed a cluster of boats jigging and went in for a look, not crazy about sambo jigging but it was interesting to watch for an hour and see how it works. Saw around 12 fish hooked up ranging from what looked around 20-30kg down to 5kg. Went off trolling skirts back towards the island - all quiet. Pulled in to Geordie Bay for a swim and a burger then skimmed back to Freo on glassy water - a great solo trip out on the water!

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Johno,  Its good to hang back and watch it for a while and see where the strike zones are and get your drift right, the more successful boats worked a tight area and constantly re positioned themselves while other boats I suspect were jigging off the school.

You have captured the hive of activity that occurs out that way perfectly.

They look like some nice shots, particularily with the good use of a narrow FOV. The compression is really killing them though. Any chance of uploading a few with lower compression settings and a little larger?

They are really crunched - I'll create better versions in an "MJ Photos" folder on the weekend.

Perfect Day that one.  PGFC

Perfect Day that one.  PGFC had a club day on sambos with 10 boats fishing spread across three agregations all tag and release.  The northern spot is full of XXL fish and sharks but the barges were producing sligtly smaller fish, no sharks with Mulloway to 8kg amongst them.  I also saw another solo fisho catching some good sized pinkies here too.  A mate dropped a +15kg Spaniard nearby aswell!

Thanks for the pics MJ, good work.
