Sure Catch wind on leader - !!! SURE CRAP !!!!!
Just thought I would warn people not to buy these wind on leaders. I usually only ever buy richter wind ons but on this day in BCF they were all sold out and I saw they had the "Sure catch" brand there, you get 2 in 1 pack for the price of 1 richter leader so I thought alright may as well grab them cause I needed a leader. Got one of the the 60lb leaders out of the packet and first problem - its only 1.2metres long - how is that a wind on leader? guess it is if im using a fishing rod thats only about 1 metre long! I thought stuff it - i'll still attach the leader and lenghten it later with other 60lb mono i had so I catpawed the dacron to my 10kg (22lb) mono from the reel and pulled - the dacron/60lb mono leader join pulled straight out with not much force. That leader is obviously faulty so I did the same again with the other wind on in the packet and the dacron/mono join pulled apart even easier so dont buy surecatch wind on leaders

What's the benefit in Wind on
What's the benefit in Wind on leaders rather than buy leader material and join the length you want yourself?
Can you more easily swap out Wind on leaders for a different weight class for different conditions?

Ive been buying richter lures of all sizes
and I see the richter wind ons next to them so I kind of figure they are all designed to go together with each other plus I like the dacron loop seems much neater than a knot. I just know that if I tie 10kg mono to say 37kg mono trace with an albright and it snaps at the albright knot I will be mega pissed off that i didnt use the dacron loop on a richter wind on.

nail on the head
A wind on is great if you have small eyes and want to use a heavy leader. I make my own, from 60 to 130lbs.
where you based beeroclock? I've got some you can have, they run between 6 and 9 metres.
drop me a PM if you're interested
cheers

Why?
Never used a wind on leader in over 40 years of fishing and never had the line snap with a fish on right next to the boat so why do you need one?
To me it seems like a big lot of overkill but that's only my opinion.

When running full length
When running full length leaders to game fishing rules I find it advantageous to be able to have the angler keep winding until the fish is with in tagging range.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I might be missing
I might be missing something??? I buy the jankai or whatever its called by the roll and tie it to the braid using an FG knot and cut it to about 4 metres in length. I thought that was standard.... whats the difference?
Fish! HARD!

I hear what your saying, the
I hear what your saying, the only time I use wind ons is line class game fishing and pitching, with lever drags filled to capacity there's no room for a leader knot and when pitching baits on thread lines you don't want a knot on the spool. I make my own because I've failures on the store bought ones.

I don't know mate, an 80 lb
I don't know mate, an 80 lb leader tied to 40lb main line can make a fairly large knot.
I use them on my surf outfit. The idea is that the windon is long enough to wrap around your reel 3-4 times, extend the length of your rod and have sufficient line at the end to try your rig and sinker to. Trying to cast a lump of lead and 1/2 a mullet puts a fair amount of strain on the line, that knot comes off the reel at a fair pace and if it hits an eye, you loose your leader and rig, or the eye.
Happened to me twice before I went to windons. I tried casting a 12 oz sinker to slide a big bait . 1st cast was great, 2nd cast the knot caught the eye at the tip of the rod, sounded like a small gunshot when my rod tip and leader parted ways. An 8 -12mm eye on the tip of your rod is not big enough to allow a decent leader knot through, if you are fishing with a heavish leader. I would put 60 lbs at the minimum leader size for a castable windon, anything less (40lbs) and a knot would be fine.
A windon leader makes a very small knot which passes through the eyes easily
But that is just me, each to his own.

They are good for barra/game
They are good for barra/game fishing where you can wind your leader through the guides easily to get a couple of wraps of your heavier leader on the reel and use thumb pressure at the boat...but I would agree with Carnarvonite a little, not really necessary ... and a bit of a wank especially for bottom bashing IMO. But each to there own, especially if you can tie your own. If you break off above the your windon, you still need to tie a bimini or whatever you use to join the wind on too.

OH yes
and if you are on a boat with a fully rollered rod I would imagine that a windon leader would pass through the runners a lot easier?

Richter fan
I have used the richter wind ons for years. The problem with the sure catch and 10x is that they are very stiff and often break when tied. I don't touch the stuff. I use a softer mono such as the richter or Jinkaii for all rigs. Richter leaders for all of the rods from trolling, jigging, BB and chucking lures. I find the range covers all lb requirements and are well made. I do also value John's opinion and also have a mate that does not use a leader at all unless trolling. If you are trolling for billies, I would think a leader of quality is a must. I have seen a few lines go ping that have been without a good leader. Beer o'clock, I have found practice makes perfect and I can tell you that spending a little more makes the difference.

Wind ons are mainly used
Wind ons are mainly used when running mono mainline. Eg game fishing or when sliding baits for sharks a mono to mono knot is bloody huge otherwise. I make my own mainly in 80lb. Pretty easy and heaps cheaper than buying them. I tie fg or pr when i run braid.
