Swan River Crabs!!!

With yesterdays arvo weather forecast looking superb and a taste for Swan Crabs on the cooking agender Shaun (FW-Shabba) and myself took off late arvo in chase of big Swan River blueys!!!!!

We had a late arvo launch on my boat and after baiting up at Mosmans Bay it was just a matter of dropping the nets and having a swim to cool off!

After retreiving the drop nets several times we bageed out in 2-3 hours. This arvo sesh was enjoyable and we released many legal sized crabs and just wanted the well over size biggens!!!!

We only wanted a feed and I said to Shabba 12 will do, that we got (released plenty well oversized also) but on the de-baiting run we got a double banger blueys and a few extra so theres's 16 .....YUM =)

Good to catch up again Shaun.........see you tomorrow for Marron mate

 If everyone only take males

Wed, 2013-01-09 09:22

If everyone only take males it does actually have a negative impact on the population. It is healthy to take a reasonable  mix.

i was waiting for someone to amp up about the females!! why wouldnt you?? if everyone only takes males that will cause there to be an inbalanced ratio. the females taste just as good why not harvest as many females as males?? no males equals no babies

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Questions!

Wed, 2013-01-09 11:28

Depths wise, I crabbed around the 10-20m mark and deeper was more consistent!

Bait used........Tuna heads!

As for the female crab.....read Flangies & Snappermiles answers as they are spot on. I've also had discussions with Fisheries about female crabs and they said the same thing and the officer I spoke to said he takes a big female crab or two!

(As for berried females they go back)

My spots at the Narrows/Brewery 2-4m are firing but I'm liking the lower reaches at the mo!

Yo Soupy....the marron season is early this year......Shabba & Michael are on their way now and then we leave. As for when you return home you have some catching up to do mate =)

Thanks fella's for the comments, the crabs are full of meat and sweet tasting........... gotta love the Swan crabs!
