Swan river landbased

Seen some good reports of fish in the swan in the newspapers but have never fished it before and wanted to know where abouts the fish (tailor, flathead, etc, not really sure what to expect) are in the river and how to target them. I'll be fishing landbased.

thanks in advance for any advice, can't wait to get up there!

 Atm any flats are producing

Mon, 2013-12-09 07:04

Atm any flats are producing flathead, grab some hard bodies and some soft plastics from local tackle store or search here for brands, z man grubs in motor oil and Atomic plazos in a bluefish sparkle colour have worked well for me,

tailor, around sunset find a drop off and have a cast, gold twisty works good, the narrows seems go be a good place to start.

havent chased the black bream for a while so I cannot vouch for their whereabouts this time if year, but the old river prawn with a trace to a light ball sinker lobbed into some snags/structure has worked for be, they can be finicky lil bastards so don't strike on initial bite ( you'll know when your hooked) wait a for a few because bream tend to play with their food a bit. Obviously blowies again will curse you here. Try further up river

Mulloway..... Can't help ya...can't even help myself

Canning bridge

Mon, 2013-12-09 19:58

Would some where around the canning bridge be good for wading out for flatties and if so which side. Already have atomic grubz that i use for whiting aswell as some squidgy wrigglers but i'll stock up on some more plazos and maybe a blade. And what tide is best, i was thinking get there on a reasonably high tide but would be best when its going out. Will try and go this weekend. And hopefully come back with some good reports

 Blowies in the river will

Mon, 2013-12-09 21:52

Blowies in the river will drive you nuts, forget trying to avoid them when your fishing between the narrows & freo. Learn to live with them or you'll end up standing waist deep in the water screaming like a mad man. Placcies can produce if you have the patience to keep replacing tails (the blowies will maul them) or you work them fast enough to keep them mostly away from the blowies. I hate soft plastics so I throw hardbodies around instead. You still get just as many blowies but at least the lure comes back intact. There's rarely any difference in catch rates between hards & placcies when it comes to flatties, they just aren't that fussy. Good hardbodies to try are ecogear sx-40, atomic hardz in the 40 & 50mm sizes, cranka shad & cranka minnow & the strike pro Pygmy. Those lures will all catch flathead, bream & tailor (so should the placcies Pegs mentioned). If you want to try flats fishing then google maps is your friend, simply google perth, click maps & then choose the sattelitite image. Zoom in a bit & you will start to see vast areas of flats between freo & the city, just pick the area that suits you. Early morning or late arvo will give you a decent chance of finding bream up on the flats & any drop offs into deepish water are worth trying for tailor around sunrise/sunset.

 cityflicker, put  some great

cityflicker, put  some great info there. For flathead you don't have the to get the really expensive hard bodies, I find they really aren't that fussy when it comes to colours or swim action, aslong as it works the bottom of the water column they will smash it, I like the halco laser pros in 45mm. the little metal vibes work well but I find they snag easily if the bottom is rocky where the bibbed minows tend to bounce off them. Another popular lure is the prawn star which is softish but won't get wrecked by blowies, haven't tried them yet but heard they are good.

A solid flatty will get a 10cm long lure down if it wants to but your better off sticking to lures of 8cm & under. A smaller fish might not be able to eat a big lure but a big fish can eat a small one. You would think a bigger lure would put the blowies off a bit but it doesn't seem to work that way, I've caught just as many on 7-10cm lures as I have on my little 2-5cm bream lures.
