Swiftcraft 5.6m Viking Total Rebuild

I have just started a full rebuild on a Swiftcraft Viking and currently it is in the fibreglass shop being re gel coated inside and out expecting quite a transformation anyone interested in following this rebuild ? I  have added some photos so far the Total build should be finished in about 4 weeks ready to fish. Call it crazy for spending $45K on a rebuild but I have had many fishing boats over the years and just love the ride these hulls give also the stability at rest. Swiftcraft made 3 variations of the 5.6m hull the Explorer half cab the Dominator Cuddy cab and the Viking runabout I chose the Viking as I am a serious fisho and hate valuable deck space being wasted with cabs. Some of the features of the rebuild include new 140 4st Suzuki, new windscreen, new seats, new stainless rocket launcher and bow rail, new canopies, new HDS 10 and Radar, new 27meg,VHF radios, new anchor winch, new dunbier twin axle trailer. Everything on this boat will be replaced except the Hull.

Hope you can follow the rebuild over the next 4 weeks will contantly update the photos stay tuned

Brought the boat for $2000 the following 2 photos are when I brought it.

This photo is when I striped her back ready for Gelcoating

Can't see any pics.

But it should be a great tub when finished.

I'm a big fan of rebuilds & progress shots etc, especially breathing new life into old boats.

Fix the pics and keep them coming.

Boats a good pickup, 45k on it is pretty full on though for upgrade.  A mate got a 6.2 swiftcraft in excellent nick with near on brand new 225 4stroke for 21k just recently.  All it needed were some new clears and a rocket launcher.

2 Pack

Fri, 2012-10-12 17:37

Thanks for the interest guys

Scubafish

Its not 2 pack being sprayed on its Gelcoat I decided against the 2 pack dont like the finish  Gelcoat a lot more expensive but the final finish is supreme.

Adam

Yes 45K is a bit much but the way I looked at it once finished I would struggle to buy a 5.6m boat brand new fully tricked for that price and I do love the hull. Other than Ali boats there are not a lot of fibreglass runaboats (no Cab) out there new in this length and beam they certinly dont make them as solid as the swiftcraft now days

Good call Glastro

Fri, 2012-10-12 21:42

You're right Glastro - it is his money & boat so what should anyone's elses opinion matter! This should be a pretty quick rebuild if all things go to plan- so we shouldn't be waiting too long for extra posts. I salute you all who do a rebuild - its a massive job. Reckon if I ever got to that opportunity the boat would be called "Sign here" coz I'd be getting issued with divorce papers.

Nigel and the team down at Ocean Whaler have started the inside, the hull and sides have been Gelcoated sanded and buffed very happy with the finish I changed the colour arround the top from the orange you see in the photos above to navy blue they still have the hull from the gunnels down wrapped in plastic to protect while they work inside but as soon as it comes off Ill take more pics and post next week some time.

how much did the gelcoat cost if you don't mind me asking?

Also, would it be worth while raising the transom to suit a 25" leg? Thats what I did with my Baron Sportsman and made it thicker to, made a nice step when climbing aboard.

cheers

Tue, 2012-10-16 20:32

Is it just a std HVLP with a large nozzle? 3.0mm  or 4.0mm ? Is there any 'orange peel' finish that has to be sanded down to a smooth finish ?

curious

looking great mate, would be great to see some inside pics as its coming together.

bet your getting itchy to get it out for a blast!!

i think that trailer looks to small for the boat mate, there dosnt seem to be enough lenght left at the front to go forward,

if its on a cradle(suspension) at least that can be moved back, dont want more weight on the rear than the front.

just rechecked the pic, it is on a cradle so you can move that around to get the balance right(hevier on the front, about 10%from memory)

cheers mate

He had part of a hull cut away to show the processess involved in making them. Looked bloody strong. Keep the pics coming mate.

The rails on the floor, you could call them shine protectors. Are they far enough off the deck to slip your feet under?

It seems to have good high sides but when your fishing it's good to have extra footing.

I am the same and there is heaps of room under the lower side pockets for your feet on those swelly days the last boat I had which was the Pride Albatross had no where to slip your feet under and found myself always grabbing for the rocket launcher.

Wrong Boat trailer

Mon, 2012-11-12 10:37

Story behind the trailer size !  the trailer was ordered for a 5.6m boat and delivered to Ocean Whaler marine, when Nigel winched the boat onto the trailer it was very apparent then it was the wrong trailer so Nigel moved the front winch bar 300mm forward so he could get the motor fitted. Today we took the boat and trailer back to dunbier and sure enough the trailer frame was for a 5.2 meter boat the unfortunate thing is they dont have any 5.6m multiroller trailers till next Feb. So we decided to get the 5.7m keel and roller trailer instead which they are fitting the boat on today ready this afternoon. Oh well we dont drive our boats on anyway and boats especially heavy fibreglass boats should take the wait on the Keel anyway rather than the sides so Keel trailer it is glad we got that sorted....

Boat goes to stainless steel fabricater tomoz to get the rocket launcher, bow rail and anchor winch fitted then off to the trimmer

Looking smooth in that new shiny trailer

A walk deck, to hook the boat on, your trailer would make retrieving it a lot less wet.

And an electric winch will make it effordless.

Why would you put a winch on

Tue, 2012-11-13 07:24

Why would you put a winch on a little boat like that? For the most part, they are slow and a pain. I always hate it when you get a spot behind a couple of old dodderers and an electric winch at the ramp.

Just drive aboard, its easier and a lot quicker.

We, the old codgers, always

Thu, 2012-11-15 06:44

We, the old codgers, always look in amazement of all the damage and cafafle the cap backwards brigade does to the ramps, the trailers and sometimes the boat in question when the full of testosterone swanks are trying to be super frozen cool driving their boat up on a trailer by the engine!

Never mind that it is prohibited to do this at certain ramps plus a well set up electric winch retrieve system is faster and safer to use and by one person only.

Cap backwards crew? You

Thu, 2012-11-15 06:49

Cap backwards crew? You missed the mark there, but I guess once you get to a certain age, pretty much everyone looks cooler and younger.

* One of the most experienced drive-aboard skippers I know was born circa 1960.

* A woman I know that was born in 1946, took the electric winch off her boat, because she found it slow. Did I mention that she solo launches and retrieves? At the beach too?

Speaking of a certain

Thu, 2012-11-15 08:24

Speaking of a certain age;

With all the Googled wisdom you seem to have on here, one needs to have lived for a few hundred years to aquire all that valuable clicking knowledge.

And to drive your boat onto a trailer, first of all you need to have both!

To take a winch of a boat trailer is like not having a spare tyre, madness.

Just keep to the kitchen.

Ahh you're confused yet again ;)

The woman born in 1946 winches her boat up *by hand* after removing the electric winch, because she thought it was slow.

If it works for you though, keep at it!

hey guysi have a drive on

Thu, 2012-11-15 17:48

hey guys

i have a drive on trailer(and a hand winch) and i am 100% certain i can have my boat on and out of the drink before you even start to wind the winch.

once my sons learn to back the trailer better i will be even quicker.

i have see it many times at woodys where i will be beside another boat hand winching, i can be up at the bin emptying shit out of my boat while they are still going.

yes some ramps you cant drive on, but you can still have it in gear and drive on at idle and winch the last little bit up.

yes sometimes you cant drive on at all, but at least i have that option.

and yes i agree the electric winch is even slower, i have to put up with one tomorow on a mates big tub while we do some testing in the river.

just thought i would chuck my 2 bob in...

i have the swiftcraft mariner (next one down from viking,dominator)..i have landrover starter motor with pully  and pully on winch..rips mine up in 2 seconds ..by the time someone tries to line up and drive on iam washing boat...also i dont stuff ramp launching area up ..(digging massive holes ) some ramps it is not allowed (drive on) due to this reason ,,trailer wrong.why get winch ? ..i think it is one off the best swiftys i have seen in ages ,,,"WELL DONE' guys fantastic ...i just put new trailer under mine tezzas trailers .all made off sea channel fantastic ,heaps cheaper than any other trailer, but you loose no quaility ...skid..rollers and multi rollers...brilliant made. $3.700 all up .with spare wheel..all led light mint.getting new power winch made using the camry starter motor (heaps more grunt beleive it or not)...my next door neighbour just bought a dominator...same colour  as yours blue and white..exact.. he is also fitting 140 motor exact..i have owned 4 swiftys over my fishing years ..i love them won't have any other boat..once again fantastic...."GO THE SWIFTYS"

who gives a shit what trailer u got as long as it suits the boat.at least its a brand spanka gotta be pretty lazy to whinge about retreiving a boat manually( if its not 8 metres long). next everyone is gonna be using electric reels to pull up bloody whiting. what ever happened to a bit of elbow grease.?  after all like he said better support with the keel rollers anyway. i wanna see this beast in action.

Been waiting until the finished boat was up to comment  .Great job she looks brand new or as good as. Swiftcraft are a good hull and have an awsome reputation as blue water boats.I think you made the wright choose rebuilding the old boat ,money well spent. Good luck and look forward to some pics with blood on the deck .

Got me inspired

Thu, 2012-11-15 09:42

to buy an old swifty/baron to do up myself now. I've been playing and experimenting with spraying gelcoat on a few items and getting the hang of it....

Yours is looking sweet!

Viking

I had a Viking many years ago. It was my first glass boat. Very nice ride and huge deck space.

Top looking rig you have there. You should be very proud.

Stainless work fitted New Pics

Thu, 2012-11-15 20:28

Thanks for all your comments guys it is getting closer to the final product about another week or so nothing ever goes to plan but it is getting close just cant wait too launch and test run. The Suzuki guys came down yesterday and commissined the motor for warranty purposes and fitted the prop etc all good. As you can see in the 2 pics I just posted the stainless roof front bow rail and Muir anchor winch was fitted yesterday just having a few hicups with the bow spirit roller arm the one we brought is a bit short so trying to source another one at the moment. The Radar wiring has been threaded through the rocket launcher and mounting bracket installed. Its currently in the trimmers putting the canopy and clears on then back to the stainless guy tomorrow to sort the bow roller and fit the new bollards also bait table and breather for the fuel tank. Hopefully your not bored with all the photo posts but just wanted to document the rebuild stage by stage. Although I have a vision  of what the end should look like I do appreaciate you feedback thanks for following.

nice job

Sat, 2012-11-17 06:39

The boat is really looking great.

can you tell me where you sourced the floor cover from? I have carpet that needs replacing and like the look of what you have gone with.

I would expect it will be softer under foot than carpet and simple to clean, only concern is hooks getting caught up in it. Does any one else have this in their rig?

cheers,

Floor covering

Sat, 2012-11-17 19:20

 Hi Jeff

Thanks for your comments the floor covering I brought from clark rubber its expensive about $100 per meter but worth every penny soft under foot and easy to clean out its quite heavy and sit well on the floor without movement. I have never had probs with hooks in my previous boats

Wed, 2012-12-05 08:20

Hi Baden01 - been following your swifty upgrade nice job  - I have a 5.2  swifty that I have been slowly "improving" - they are a great hull - just wondering about the blue floor matt you have in the photos - is it heavy enough to not move around  without anchoring it to the floor or do you need to somehow attach it so it doesnt move around? I want to replace the old carpet in mine and have considered the same matting that you have used - but not sure how it is when wet etc? any info much appreciated Thanks

Floor Matting

Wed, 2012-12-19 19:08

 Hi CrabKing

The Matting on the floor weighs a Ton and if cut in right does not move one bit it just sits on the deck and by its design is easy to hose down with the deck wash all debris runs down the lines to the bilge area for easy clean up much better than carpet it can get hot on those days over 35 but so does anything I highly recommend it   Get on it
