My motor is stuck in forward gear, can,t get nuetral or reverse. I can select them but just stays in forward.
Took the leg off, drained the oil(pretty black but no metal filings . the selector rod was pretty stiff so flushed the box and put new oil in.I kept working the rod thru the gears till it freed up a bit.Could get all gears and the prop turned the right way for forward and reverse and was free in nuetral . put it back together and yep its stuck in forward again. Rang a mech and was told that the gears will be stuffed ,not worth fixing .Just thought i'd check here first in case anyone had any info or ideas.
cheers

Gears
Would have to agree with the mech. you called. My theory would be the clutch dog teeth have worn into the drive gear, which is why you are unable to disengage the gear. However, this is opposite to what would usually happen with the rounding of the gears.
I have attached a youtube link showing gears which are rounded resulting in the gear disengaging under load. Opposite to your issue I know, but instead of the gear being rounded your gear could be undercut. Therefore, depending on the age/value of the outboard and cost of repair it my be worth squaring up the teeth engagement yourself?
Please note only a theory. Potentially someone may have tried to grind the rounded gear previously, and gone too far as explained in the video.

Gears
Thanks for the info.I might as well pull it down and have a look. If it is the gear then might be able to square it or put a used gear in its place.
I did hit a rock one time so it might even have broken a couple of teeth later . Have also put in an ad for a used leg/gearbox
It was a good runner so prob worth trying to fix it

Buy an online workshop manual..
I did for my Mercury, and saved me heaps of cash already - you can get a download of the manual in PDF for around $15, just make sure you have a photo of the serial number plate, so you get the right manual.
This will show you what it would look like new, how to dis-assemble the leg, how to check wear and how to put it back together correctly.. and some troubleshooting tips.. always worth the 3 coffees they cost IMHO.. then if you cant work out the issue, ebay would be a good source of spares for the motor, as heaps of marine wreckers advertise on there with used bits..
Good Luck with finding the issue..
