Tailor Hunting

Ok, well, i thought it might be a good idea, since tis the season now for it and coming up... to throw it all out there about hunting these fish..

Now I dont mean, knock off from work, its blowing a NW or SW not too strong to battle to cast and not too light for no chop so Ill go fishing and see what happens at sunset...

I mean: OK I am going to hunt tailor, ANYTIME OF THE DAY..

Apart from the usual rigmarole of berleying up bigtime near some whitewashy, reefy sandy gutter or hole, i really want to get a good list of spots that can fire during the day, aswell as early morning and sunset...

Im sure others would be keen on finding out some info on this as I hate it when you got some time up ya sleeve for fishing and you wanna go L/B and you want to try for some tailor but you got no bloody options because its either too sunny, or too flat, or just not right conditions where you usually go....

So I guess what im asking is, does anybody have any standout pointers or qualities that they look for in a spot for fishing for tailor during the day?

Better yet, does anybody know some good stretches known to hold the toothies during the day? Ie, stretches of beach or something that actually have something to hold the fish there...

Or is this a fallicy question and no matter what, unless its just a blue moon thing, the tailor just cant be had during the day because theyre too far out.

ive always founds out that as the sun gets higher the tailor go deepers! thats why i love fishin early morn or late arvo/dusk when theres minimal or no sun!
i would be trying the stretch of reef along mindarie way..north of the marina! also just to the left of the marina on that reef there..
early morn or arvo with poppers would produce i reckon
might have to go try 2moro morn..

Yeah, you'd think, but ive

Yeah, you'd think, but ive tried that lol

:P

The stretch of reef north of mindarie produces nothing ever, because there is nothing there foodwise for the fish to hold them there... the baitfish dont bother going there, neither do the toothies...

south of marina wall on the reef, done that, tailor have been caught there, but yeah, ive hit that thing with poppers numerous times in the past week and a half, at all times of the day, including early morning and late arvo... only thing i get is herring on poppers lol

Hmm sam, the thing i hate is i know the tailor come on after dark, but i just got this stigma that lures wont work at night, however, many believe they will, and like, i half believe them, but meh i dont know...

when I caught that tailor the other day, the sun was down but it was like twighlight... I knew that using a metal would become redundant within 10-15 mins or less after that....

Thing is I hate using bait, lol, so yeah, spose im looking for a good place to throw lures at during the day.... but if they all head out deep during the day, maybe its a pointless excercise.... however, why is it I keep hearing reports of people pulling in choppers and some a little bigger like during the middle of the day? Doesnt make sense to me heh

Maybe they be overcast days or something

If you fished sunrise, at what time of the day, do you reckon according to the proximity of the sun of course, would the tailor go off teh bite and head out wide?

the reefs directly north of mindarie small groyne? Where you can walk out?

Inbetween the small groyne and the quinns caravan park, where the cliff faces are etc and the whole place is one big reef shelf?

You tlaking about that place?\

Also, in regards to catching tailor middle of the day...

Using bait or lures sherbz? And how far out did you have to cast to get the strike?

mindarie

There are certainly fish on the reef north of the mindarie marina *hint* *hint* big ones during winter too

I've always find tailor go off the chew ~2hrs after the suns up then back on just around dusk... but i'm sure you'd find the odd one during the day

hmm strange cos I always looked at the reef and thought that there would be but I asked someone in a tackle store once and they reckon that reef is called crayfish reef and doesnt produce anything ever heh

You're talking about the reef which is like, inshore near the cliff faces right? Not an offshore reef north of mindarie?

Rickets, have you tried

Rickets, have you tried Burns rocks North from oceanreef, we fished that early morning on time while it was blowie and did well on choppers on halco twisties, casting into the white water after the reef. Mulies did alright aswell, and had a couple of small rays from there aswell.

yeah, but dunno how good it

Sat, 2007-11-10 19:38

yeah, but dunno how good it would be during the day...

plus, there is A LOT of ground between ocean reef and burns beach.... i know the area though... but yeah.. hard to find a good channel which you can get good distance casting out into the strike zone from the beach on...

When you say, "after the reef", do you mean, like, behind the reef or between you and the reef after the wave has broken over it?

I have a couple of spots between burns and iluka but nothing substancial that I havent really  had a good chance to really look for a good casting spot yet... one which has a good vantage point to a nice whitewashy bit which can be easily reached from the shore.

ok, well, went fishing on

Sun, 2007-11-11 06:30

ok, well, went fishing on the reef north of mindarie marina... was ultra low tide so i could walk right out... was casting out from there in various spots, didnt get any interest... even after berleying up pretty hardcore...

Hmm i wont discount it completely yet, given the conditions, ill try hitting it again one day when its howling south west or something and see what the chop brings in...

About 500,000 people rocked up at quarter to 7 though, bloody abalone season.

Hmm it really is a nice

Sun, 2007-11-11 15:15

Hmm it really is a nice stretch of reef... i think it would be a great winter performer... same as a lot of the reefy coastlines... oh well, thats the thrill of the hunt i guess...

I did a cashy job today to get me my jumbo slaying beach combo...

Got a Shimano Starlo SSX 9' Shorespin with a Daiwa Capricorn 4500J

mmmm :D

Now I cant wait to hit some good reefy beaches where I can make the distance without endangering my terminal :P

Hi Ya, Now, don't get me

Thu, 2007-11-15 19:10

Hi Ya,

Now, don't get me wrong, I am no fisherman, but I do like trying.  What  am about to say isn't from experience, unfortunately.

But, from what I have read, you really need high tide for tailor and, aparently, any time of day or night.  So, Rickets, if you were there at 'ultra low tide' you were probably there at the wrong time of day.  Further, if fishing at night, no moon is best.

Cheers.

dunno about that mate, high tide obviously helps with all fish, but i know people who have caught tailor through a low before :P

I found the best time to fish the blue holes at Kalbarri when I was there in September was after the turn of the low tide.  I think it comes down to being in the right place, at the right time. Colin Hay
