Tailor in the Swan

Hi There,

Went fishing this afternoon in the Swan. Launched the tinny at Mosmans and went trolling with Halco twisties 10g (the ones with the red colouring on the sticker), just on dusk they started biting, and got 3 in about an hour and a half - great fun! They were 36, 41 and 38cm.

The weather was great as well.

Trolled some lures early this morning but didnt get a touch.  Ended up ducking out through the heads and picked up a couple of squid just outside, one was very good size.

Went out today.  Got my bag in half an hour on twisty's and x-raps.  All between 30cm and 40cm.  Best way to spend and arvo with a mate and a few tinnies.

Speed

Thu, 2012-10-25 07:52

Hey Crew,

Going to have a crack in the tinny this weekend around Point Walter & Karrakatta bank but havn't done much river fishing before.

Any tips on trolling speed for choppers? I will be using small minnows, although sounds like twisties are the go.

Cheers

be patient

Boydy I find the best speed is about 4-5 knots, just above idle on our 70hp yammie does the trick. What i find most of the time is that i get nothing for the first 15-25 mins and then as soon as you get one, you cant stop reeling them in! I just use either a 20 or 30g halco twisty on some 80lb flurocarbon leader and it does the trick, trawling it about 30m or so behind the boat; dont let it be too close to the back of the boat. In last 6 weeks all the tailor i've been getting are between 30-45cm in the river, I go near that point walter area but not right on it, get out their and find a good spot for yourself ;) Make sure you bleed them out straigh away if you plan on eating them and whack em straight in an ice slurry.

Hope it treats you well mate!

80lb Flurocarbon LEADER, even

Thu, 2012-10-25 12:05

80lb Flurocarbon LEADER, even the little 30cm tailor will chomp through anything less than 50lb thats a leader. It's better than using wire trace. I use about 50cm of it, and FYI i do actually use an 8lb line on my Sienna 1000 for a little bit of fun, but with the 80lb leader on the end of it ;)

why 80lb?

I would (and do) comfortably throw around $25-$30 daiwa doubleclutchs and similar lures on 8lb leader for river tailor....

would never go any heavier then 8lb for anything in the river... other then mullaz.

lighter leaders get heaps more hits as well.

River is thick with them at the moment.

I have always used 10lb flurocarbon, used 20lb one day when i ran out of 10lb and I thought that was overkill. I'm yet to lose a lure to a chopper in the river. Tailor almost always hit the ass end of a lure or bait, don't usually get their teeth anywhere near your line.

My twistys are covered in bite marks on the half closest to the treble (back half) almost no marks near the line end.

Thu, 2012-10-25 15:16

80lb is just silly, it'll just kill the action of a lure. I usually run a 10 or 15lb leader depending which one I happen to chuck in the bag. I've use 20lb in the river before but like Noxious I felt like it was overkill. Hell, even on the 70+cm winter jumbos from last winter I only use 30lb mono over the reefs & I never lost a lure/fish then either.

Yep 20lb leader is plenty. Haven't lost a rig yet. the lures swim better the lighter you go. Roll on Sunday will be out there!

I use the latest and greatest 8 lbs nanofill tied direct to a little halco popper. The line is awesome. It improves casting distance and is majorly effective. Just fish from a local jetty near the raffles hotel and always produced.

okay guys its just my preference, no need to attack someone who offers advice that has seem them catch hundreds of tailor in the river in the last couple months. Most of the time on these forums it seems to be people having a go at other people, everyone just needs to chill out! But good to know that everyone else knows everything there is to know about fishing :)

Maybe you should be the one to chill out mate, nobody here is attacking you. You might also consider the possibility that there's a better way to do things than what your doing. Your tackle & techniques should be constantly evolving. If you've got the blinkers on & don't want to listen to people that have been fishing this place for a combined couple of hundred years, that's your loss.

i have been out a couple of times since in the tinny

Thu, 2012-10-25 23:21

Am still using the halco twisties (with the red stickers), and seem to only get 3 in a session, but they are all good sized. I also got a few snook which were about 35cm odd. I put them back...dont know if they are any good to eat or not?

I normally use 10lb braid, with a 20lb leader on, and find that it is more than enough for what I do. I only use a stradic 2500 (i think) and a light carbon graphite rod, and it is great fun!

Each to their own, and as long as you have fun, i dont think that it really matters the techniques that you use to do it. for me, when out on the tinny, the catching of the fish is only one part of the experience. I just enjoy getting out of the office, wind blowing, water splashing and a couple of cans of gin and tonic with a mate. the fish are the bonus.

have a good one.

Now there's the kind of diplomatic answer you hardly ever see on this site :)

Perhaps next time you have your 3 Dannyg it might be worth trying a different lure for a little while & see if that gets you a few more. Sometimes the fish catch on that grabbing a certain lure is dangerous & they get put down. A different lure sometimes works to get you a few more. I've had it work like that sometimes & end up using several lures in a session.

I've got a mate that loves eatting snook but I've never tried them myself. Maybe keep one next time round & give it a try.

will certainly try mixing up the lures that I am using. I am still new to the whole trolling game.  one question.... do you also troll hardbodied lures, such as rapala, nils master etc? or only metal slices?

thanks for the advice.

You can troll any lure you

Fri, 2012-10-26 09:39

You can troll any lure you can cast & retrieve mate, even poppers. I actually prefer trolling hardbodies because for whatever reason I get way more fish on them than I do twisties or any other metal. Atomic Shad 40 is by far my most productive tailor lure in the river. The only trouble with trolling some of the small minnow style lures is that some larger outboards can't idle slow enough for them to swim straight even after tuning the lure. That's where leccy motors come into thier own but most lures will handle outboard idle speeds pretty well, especially Nilsmasters & Rapalas which usually have a nice tight action.

Fri, 2012-10-26 08:04

Got plenty of ideas to go on with crew.

Thanks for all of your input, picked up a little halco 20g twisty last night to go with the river2sea minow I will be dragging around tomorrow. Got home pulled out my reel to rig up my new little lure and dropped the thing on the ground, no longer turns. Looks like will be back down the shop to get a new reel this arvo.

I hope I find a fish!

Cheers.

As I like to fish light (4lb

Sat, 2012-10-27 18:52

As I like to fish light (4lb for tailor) I have lost some fish and lures to bite offs due to light leader (6-10lb fluoro) if not the leaders sometimes has scars, close to the lure. So I tryed something new today, just tied a heavier fluoro short leader to the lure with a loop knot at each end. This way the lure still works, I have adequate bite protection and I can still interchange lures with ease. Still had the same strike rate today, also bought a Drunknmonkey from BW, cant wait to christen it on some greenbacks haha. Hard to see but I also position the treble so it has one hook facing down then cut it off, leaving an upward facing 'w' hook, this way the lure doesnt get hooked on any weed. Lure is a floater too, never gets hooked on the botton, when performin tight u turns and surface strikes are awesome to watch.

I use 30lb, probly just coz

Sun, 2012-10-28 21:37

I use 30lb, probly just coz its what ive got leftover from trips north, but I've lost em on that. I've also landed plenty on 10lb flouro, oh well ya win some ya lose some. Had a little troll in east freo last weekend and got 3 on a cheapy ebay bought (chinese) bibbed minnow (blue pilchard kinda pattern), while the halco twisty didnt get touched once. Later on that day went to a spot nearby with my brother and i was using a bluescode while he had on a twisty; I got 2 in about 4 casts, while he was gettin none. So i gave him my rod and he got 2 aswell before they just shutdown (all on 30lb leader and snap swivels; also tried changing lures etc).

If u asked me the day before this i woulda said twisties are the go-to lure for them :/
