I made a call to fisheries in

Mon, 2013-01-14 08:05

I made a call to fisheries in Rockingham in the previous week. . They called back a few days later to confirm details as they were having problems with their messaging systems apparently. They said they hadn't made it to the site but would start keeping an eye on the area I reported.

Calling Fisheries

Mon, 2013-01-14 11:38

Perhaps they were too busy setting lines to catch GWs.  Ha Ha Ha...... Pissing my pants again ;)

Consider how much of a pain it would be to turn up and do something you wanted done. Add to this dealing with the public which aren't in a boat, it might be a bit hard.

And you would apreciate how hot it was, and how many flies there were.

Ugh well, perhaps next time.

A big thumbs up for your efforts to have people fish sensibly, not easy to stand out like that. Hope people took your advice without getting up you.

Something worked for me in mandurah

Mon, 2013-01-14 12:09

on my swing off. Tailor fishing and some ignoramus was taking undersize tailor.

I noticed that and said mate if you get caught with those you could get your gear conviscated, fined about $4000 and pay court cost.

He was surprised, and said he thought there was no limit for "herring"!!!!

A Fish ID booklet I had was passed over and he left sort off happy. He chucked the now dead tailor back.

So maybe approaching this from an education way and not an agro way might work, but then I think he was a family man with kids, not educated in the rules and probably only fish rarely.

I still call Fisheries anyway and they do come to this spot, so might have saved him some $$$ had they turned up. Was only 3 tailor and the big ray had a free feed.

I was up at Jurien Bay

Mon, 2013-01-14 12:52

about a month ago, there were a group of 'foreigners' taking everything that they caught, mainly trumpeters and herring, they then caught a mulloway, about 42cm, they seemed very happy at the first descent fish they caught. I informed them it was undersize and measured it on the fisheries sticker on the pier, and showed them a picture in a pamphlet I had. They didn't seem too fussed and I could see they were in no mood to throw it back. They unhooked it and put it next to the rest of the fish they had caught. I then proceeded to walk-up to where the fish was lying, picked it up and threw it back. Needless to say they seemed a bit pissed off, but I didn't care. They didn't hang around for too long after that, packed up and left.

Mon, 2013-01-14 17:30

This shits me, i dont mind telling people how it is especially asians. and no offence to asians as im part asian myself but jesus christ they take everything. I actually take it personally when i see people take small fish, especially bream but over the years all you can do is tell them its undersize and if they dont listen a little plea of you'll never get a big one if you dont put back the small. then start talking about jesus if they dont listen and they'll either leave or put it back.

I decided to call fisheries

Mon, 2013-01-14 17:34

I decided to call fisheries when I had advised a few people the limit for tailor in a friendly manor, yet still a bloke asked his dad the limit is 30cm yeah? And his dad said just keep it. By then I had had enough and made the call. Ignorance is one thing and educating peopleis the right thing tto do. But these guys deserved a fine for blatantly disregarding the rules. These tailor were barely 25cm.

Who paid for the extra fisheries mobile patrols-we did

Mon, 2013-01-14 20:30

Talking about responces from fisheries really gets up my nose. I have phoned fisheries on numerous occassions down mandurah way all to no effect. I think fisheries ort to get their lies together when they state in documents how low the number of offences occur with the pro's and how high it is with the amatures. We the amatures paid the lions share for the additional fisheries offices and the set up of the fast responce group ok the mobile units then that were going to have a big effect on the illiegal fish activities throughout the state. Well in my observations if you can get a shoe horn to get them out of the air con offices we might see a reduction in the way people at the cut take large bags of herring and any other fish that gets on the line. It's not foreign nationals who are raping and pilaging it's old pensioners who when challenged about the number of fish they have comee up with the lame story that the are only catching a "few extra" for their fellow residents of the nursing home.

end of rant

Its always a shame when

Mon, 2013-01-14 20:44

Its always a shame when people take undersize but equally as bad when they take more than their limit as well, I had one situation which eats at me constantly, I saw a guy at two rocks marina with 7 dhuies...one guy on his boat called me jealous because I couldnt get 7 dhuies on my boat like he did when I said something, I saw them pulling them out from under the dash in the carpark?? Its not worth a punchup at the marina, I did tell him how pissed I was and I am no rat so I wont call fisheries but I do hope Karma catches up with him soon..

 The point's not about being

Mon, 2013-01-14 21:40

The point's not about being a rat David, it's about sustaining a fisherie. fark em I would have got their rego and called fisheries straight away. They might have been doing this sort of crap for a while. Plonkers like that need the book thrown at them.

 Agreed. Pricks like that

Tue, 2013-01-15 09:07

Agreed. Pricks like that need their asses kicked, book thrown at them and re-educated or they will keep doing it again and again. Taking the piss like that shows no regard for the rules in place and keeping your honor in not being a rat is allowing them to get away with it and do it again. Everyone should have fisheries number in their phone and not be afraid to use it.

Two Fisheries Officers at

Tue, 2013-01-15 08:29

Two Fisheries Officers at Palm Beach Jetty were doing a good job a couple of weeks ago. I watched and listened as they approached an elderly man walking off the jetty with his trolley cart and his "catch".

This is the short version: "We are Fisheries Officers and want to inspect your catch"

His reply- "I don't speak english"

What do you speak?

" Korean"

The Fisheries was on his mobile phone, and then explained to this man that they will have a Korean translater here in 20 minutes, and that he was to wait here.

In the mean time the other Officer was going thru his trolley, where they pulled out undersize crabs and undersize silver bream, and started taking photo's of them.

Then the Officer asked him where his car was parked?

He somehow understood this and pointed to a white Kia Carnival Minivan parked in the Blue Disabled Bay closest to the jetty.

That was the last straw for me,and I got up and walked home shaking my head in disbelief.

Seen an old eastern european

Wed, 2013-01-16 09:28

Seen an old eastern european bloke catching undersize tailor at Pt Walter last summer, he was keeping everything he caught even some 20cm fish. I rang fisheries but no one showed up. Seen it before with bream adn dare i say it.... asians in the canning. Maybe a recreational fishing license might be a good idea for everyone, even if it's $10 a year. The money from it could go towards educating people. I think big signs saying what you'll catch and size limits.. bag limits etc at our most popular fishing spots would  help a lot too. Was pleasantly  surprised to see fisheries at the old riverton boat ramp on saturday on the hunt for people with undersize crabs.

 Look I have had similar

Fri, 2013-01-18 19:08

Look I have had similar issues up here in Carnarvon both with the one mile and more recently the old prawning jetty.   The Prawning jetty has just about had it and is very hard to fish from but to those who brave it often do very well as the pressure is less.   I went for a climb on it a couple of months back to find three fellas (plantation workers).   They had three 20 litre buckets full of bream and other stuff all under size by a country mile.  I was very polite and informed them of the size limits for this region and offered them a fisheries measuring sticker for future reference (always carry a few with me).   Needless to say it got out of control real quick they knew it was wrong and didn’t like being called out on it.   Took their rego and reported it to fisheries that’s the best we can do right.

As a fellow Asian

Sat, 2013-01-19 17:51

I reckon start charging 10 bucks a year for a fishing license and most of them would rather not fish:). There are always people who break the rules, but as I fish very often I am seeing fewer people that break the rules these days. And if they are breaking the rules I often just have a friendly chat to them about the situation, half of them are unaware that there are actually rules and regulations about fishing. Most of them don't even know the species let alone size limits. I've seen my workers showing me pictures of their dinner and they were eating trumpeters and gobble guts:).

Cheers

Having fished

Mon, 2013-01-21 09:55

on a few different boats the last few weeks I reckon "upgrading" is a HUGE issue. People catching Dhui's and then they carry on fishing hoping to bag a bigger fish to "upgrade" the one's already in the esky! Disgusting!!!!!

well thats a F****** disgrace

Mon, 2013-01-21 14:37

well thats a F****** disgrace then, and if there fishwrecked members, they should be named and shamed.

I hope you at least said something to them? whether it was your boat or not.

Had alot of run in at clarmeont jetty back in the day regarding undersize crabs and tailor. Buckets went back in the drink, as much of the foriengers/Australians dont like it when this happens maybe itll teach a thing or two.

had a nice little altication once, some one threatened me with there bait knife, so i said two can play these games, with a filleting knife and a crow bar (from my 4wd tool chest)....and they left and there catch was returned. Im  not mr toughy, nor do i go looking for trouble, but whether your foriegners or australians, if you arnt looking at the rules before you do something. Thats just not a excuse.

Do you get in a car with out knowing the road rules? obviously there will always be people breaking rules, some people just do that , but to take the excuse " we didnt know". Thats a joke.

agree with scottnot

Mon, 2013-01-28 16:26

if fisheries would just take a walk along the most popular fishing jetties etc in mandurah they would do a hell of a lot of good just showing the flag so's to speak a walk up and down the jetty ask people how they are going and lets see your catch i think would solve a lot of the taking of under size fish and too many fish and crabs. just lately the amount of dead under size crabs washed up at falcon has to be seen to be believed people catch the poor bloody small crabs wait untill they have finished their great day crabbing then sort out their catch when then they are ready to go home and throw the now dead under size crabs back into the estuary. oooh to be thirty years younger and fitter.
