cracking the deep water code
Submitted by Paul G on Tue, 2013-01-08 20:14
Back last year I had a crack at the deep drop and struggled to get a fish. Five trips and never seen a good fish, green eyes were all we could catch. we kept on trying and as they say we cracked the code. No blue eye yet but we havent gone out wide enough yet. A few pics from the last six months.

Well done Paul, Can I ask
Well done Paul,
Can I ask what sounder / Transducers you are using , as I am just about to upgrade mine and start hunting out wide as well.
Im trying to decide between the FCV 1150 and the fcv 295 with a 2kw 200 and a 2kw 50 , but all advise is to wet face them which is a little worrying.
I currently run a 582 wet box which is great , even at 20knts out to about 50m.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Im not big on sounders and stuff ,I have a furuno 587 with 1kw transducer. It is good to 600m but you can only idle around or you lose picture .I think a lot off the othe guys use the 295 with 2-3 kw transducers.they work well and pic up the fish good, but they can still only go very slow or lose pic . i guess it depends on you buget ,and how keen you are.for me the 587 does the job

You're onto it. Freezer would have to be full most of the time I'd say. Those rubys are great looking fish.

Some serious hauls there Paul
Some serious hauls there Paul - awesome work
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Transducers for deep drop
Thanks for the info on your set ups Paul and Ryan.
Ryan can you tell me which tranny works the best for seeing the bottom fish your 3kw 28 or the 2kw 200 , and Ive heard that the 3kw really suck the batteries down , and combine that with the electric reels can it cause a problem or do you just take a spare battery.
You've got me thinking about a 3kw 50.
Also the fact that yours works well out of a wet box is a relief and ill definitely give that a go first. Are your transducers hard onto the glass inside the wet box or off a little as mine is with my 582.
