Targeting Tailor (and other larger fish) from Rocky Points

Hi. What type of rig do people use when fishing for tailer and other larger species?  I am mainly keen to try fishing from rocky points (and adjoining reefs) into deeper water in mid-west areas such as Flat Rocks, S-Bend, south of greenough river etc.

- Style of rig,

- Breaking strain/type of line

- Type of sinker and general weight (obviously depending on conditions, but general range of weights?)

- Bait

I tried a paternoster rig, with a single 30lb leader coming off a 3-way swivel (forget the size).  I attached a mulie onto 3 ganged hooks (0/3).  I just attached the hooks through the side of the mulie with the head facing down.  Is this the best way to attach a mulie, as I had a few disappear on me? Thanks

Sam

the best way to rig a mulie,

the best way to rig a mulie, is that so the last hook is through the tail, and the first hook slides either through the eye, or into the faceplate. This is because tailor take it tail first, (hence the name), and you have more chance of not being bitten off (on larger fish) - also easier to fight a fish thast isnt fouled.

Myself, I use richter plugs, metal slices and stickbaits like Addagio 125's (heavy) and Bullchops/ Bluescodes.

It really depends on the location and the conditions you are faced with. Like Leemo said, i would definitely be using lures to cover ground and potentially pick up other fish including sambos yellowtail kings etc. I cant look past Shimano Waxwings, you can cast them a mile and the action on them is to tempting for any fish! As far as rigs go, if you are fishing a traditional beach gutter with a fair bit of cross shore movement, 360 Shogun cranes with either a stiff mono for your hook trace, This seems to stop tangles when the swivel rotates. Either a gang or a snelled 6 or 7/0 rig is your best bet, snells holding out better with your bigger fish.  or single strand wire twisted. A grapnell sinker or a big star sinker is your best choice to hold bottom.  If conditions are better, with less movement, a running balll sinker with the same hook setup is a good option.

If you want to try to target mulloway landbased, my first hint would be to pull the wire off your rig, and fish mono traces, as they are a very fussy eater before they eat the bait. Trial and error is the best way to learn what rigs work best for your area. The above rig is what i use for southern waters, and i have used it baitfishing up north and it holds out nicely. Best of luck, and if you are ever down this neck of the woods, drop into the shop and we can organise a fish!

Cheers,

Think natural presentation, I do and it works for me.

Up that way , almost reguardless of the conditions I use baitcast rigs.

Dont use mulies, too soft  ,too light, but mainly use suaris, gardies and scalies,

they cast better , last longer, and the slap they make on impact attracts fish.

( as a plus they seem to attract the bigger fish)

In strong seabreezes , I use long barrell type sinkers to help with the cast.

Hardly loose any rigs compared to sinker rigs, and less tieing on means more fish.

Just match with a 10 foot rod , quite flexable but with graphite in it and a matching eggbeater and your set.

No wire just a metre and a bit of 40-60lb hard leader after your swivel.

With this rig you can work it right along those reef edges and find fish were others cant.

Takes a little time to get used to this way of fishing , but the results ( for me) speak for themselves

cheers.( ps buy and wear some good rockboots, not booties, everywhere)
