tenting it up
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Fri, 2009-05-22 22:20
well we are finally back in perth and now its time to start organising our next years holliday but this time to save some $ we are looking at tenting it , but it cant be any old tent , it has to be a big bugger with a room for kids a room for us and a room for storage . so has anyone got any ideas as to what sort to go for brand and size with durability a must as we will be keeping it for a loooooooong time but on the other side it cant be too pricey, or if anyone on here has a good condition family tent that they might want to get rid of, we will be looking at a few over the next month or so so we know what to get

Ive got one the same as this
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/OZtrail-12-x-15-Canvas-Cabin-Tent-Bonus-Sunroom_W0QQitemZ180358531900QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Tents?hash=item29fe34cb3c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A11%7C294%3A50
Its a pain in the arse to put up with only one or two people but its ok with a couple extra hands, once its up its got nice high ceilings and good shade, Id reccomend it.

Kane I've seen that or something like it in Leeman
very impressive, for a family of 4, they seemed to be quite comfortable in it as well, they had the fold away gas cooker & small webber under the verandah.

Tent For sleeping in.
In exxy we use domes for sleeping/storage in thats all. Get a good quality gazebo to do all your living and eating in/under. Way more comfy IMO

I know you guys will be towing the boat
but had to laugh last time we where in Leeman (school holidays) a small caravan pulled up and next minute three bed rolls were erected all decked out fully water proof etc, and the three young boys slept in the bed rolls, it looked fantastic and quite funny all lined up in a row. Mum & Dad had the caravan I suppose for privacy and they had the kitchen for cooking/tv,
But also in saying I've seen people bring a good size tent for mum and dad, then three small dome tents for the kids, all positioned around (mum & dads) so the gazebo could go in the middle for cooking, sitting and if it rained protection for the before mentioned. as those dome tents pack up into a little carry case even the bigger ones, would hardly take up any room in the boat.

Sneaky
Knew a chap who used to make and hire corporate tents, marquees etc,he would buy the most expensive tent to suit their needs when they went camping over the xmas break. When he returned he would take it back to the shop he bought it from and make complaints about it to get his money back. His reasoning was while he owned it and it wasn't heavy enough for him to rent it out, it would cost him money sitting in his garage and only being used for a couple of weeks per year.

Sportiva
We have a sportiva8 (8 person) It is very good dome tent fast to put up etc. It is also very good in that it has a full floor all the way through so you can sweep all the sand into a heap and then dispose of it. The key is to have your main tent just for storage and sleeping and then get a cabin tent with flyscreen and maybe drop down covers- you can setup your kitchen etc in this.
Any queries send me a PM

Somwhere in my brothers shed
is a kitchen come living marquee we made up frpm 20mm tube and tarps - used for cooking, storage and socialising if too cold outside. Used this at Pardoo for several years with each person having their own dome tent - good compromise and you only suffered your own farts at night.

Just bought an oztrail elite
Just bought an oztrail elite villa two days ago. It has plenty of room and looks like good quality. I havent tried putting it up yet though. I'll do it on my next days off and take some photos for you russ. We had a monster caravan before this that we took around australia and I must say it is going to take some getting used to getting back in a tent. At least I will be able to take the big boat with us and leave the tinny at home now.

another vote for blackwolf
yeah i'd agree with sherbs you cant go past the black wolf imo. ive had the turbo 300 with the extra awning and sunroom for about 3 years now and it has never let me down. at first i was unsure if the price was justified but i now know it was very well worth the $$$ not one blemish on the canvas or malfunction with the tent. i can vouch for it holding up in a gail force wind and lightning storm down the beach a year or so ago. Literally about 5 mins to fully setup by yourself. imo the best tent i'll ever own. if you do go a blackwolf i suggest to have a look at getting the extra awning/ sunroom with side and front room panels if you are looking at having an area for a kitchen and plenty of shade.

I was musing over the exact same thing myself........
All my (limited) research has pointed to Blackwolf, but my needs are somewhat different to yours.

Jackeroo 12 Man Tent
We have just upgraded to the same tent Kane put the ebay link up for including the sunroom. Our previous tent was a Jackeroo 12 man 3 room dome tent from Kmart. (12 men would fit no worries but they would be small men and no room for gear). It has done us for 3 years with utilising a gazebo but now we have grandkids it is getting a little small. If anyone is interested it is for sale for $250 and includes the couple of water stains for free ($599 new as of yesterday)
Anyone interested send a PM or call 0448 822 580

Hi Ya,We've got a big tent
Hi Ya,
We've got a big tent 3.6m x 7m on the ground and to high in the middle for me to reach & I stand 6 foot tall. Has two rooms in the back, large room front then the sun room out front. Absolute luxury. Bit like the ebay one Kane put up.
Carpet on the floor, in fact everything including the kitchen sink.
Unfortunately, it was the only way I could get the missus to go 'camping'.
Got to say though it does take 1/2 a day to set up but once done is very comfortable.
Personally, I prefer the rigid frame to the dome tents. I've seen to many dome tents flat on the ground in a strong wind. Yes, the do stand up again, but not comfortable to sleep in when they are sitting on your head.
Cheers.
