Not sure how I feel about this. The shark didn't do anything wrong (by the laws of nature), probably didn't deserve to die for eating food.
on the other hand, we need to protect our own species 1st and foremost, and by moving the shark it will help stop the hysteria that sets in when a shark kills a human. Better than the constant procrastination that we have to deal with here in WA
If they had watched Mythbusters they wouldve known that the bullets lose all force in the water.Should have chucked a grenade at it LOL.At least they didnt mess about and tried to get rid of it.
Shot plenty of large fish in a previous life as a longliner and yep they only go a few inches especially the .22 and 12G with slugs.
But its easy to wait a couple of seconds for it to get on the surface.
Funny thing is though, Kiwi cops dont carry sidearms. Some patrols carry firearms in the vehicle but none other than the Armed Offenders Squad carry sidearms.
That is a magic bit of coastline around Muriwai and Piha, absolutely worth the drive to go to Piha or Bethels Beach.
Very sad, shark attacks in NZ are rare as hens teeth and despite impressions ALOT of people surf dive and swim there.
now saying they shot up to 20 bullets at it, and the shark just simply rolled over and disappeared...unlikely it was killed. Picture of the cop shooting the shark looks like he's holding some sort of assault rifle

Not much hope shooting into water.
But at least they had a go at killing the shark. Heart felt sympathy to the swimmers family.
perhaps the NZ. Cops could teach our pussy Fisheries boys how to catch something and mean it.
