Thievin' Mongrel Bast#@ds!!!

Isn't it strange how when the populous takes holidays that my cray pots go missing. I have covered the ground several times now searching for rope thinking that perhaps it was just some cowboys who have run over the ropes and cut them but I have come up empty handed. I stopped doing pots a few years ago because of the pricks out there, surley if you can afford a boat you can afford your own friggin pots. If anyone out there has taken someones pot in the past DONT if you've even contemplated it DONT FRIGGIN DO IT someone has had to work to pay for the bloody things.

Now I have gotten that of my chest I guess I'll go and buy two more pots.

mindarie

Tue, 2014-01-07 10:10

I was heading out of mindarie a few weeks ago in my mates new boat and as he was playing around with a few things on his sounder we veered off course and headed towards a couple of guys who had been pulling pots along the 3mile, I was watching them with interest for a while to see if they were gettting any plus I had watched them pull 6 pots with 2 guys onm board.  Well they took one look at us coming toward them  and gunned it out of there back down to ocean reef.  looked pretty damned suspicious to me, should have grabbed there rego and passed it on to fisheries

Some toe rag stole mine from my prvate ramp that I use. Thanks for that you thieving pricks. I'll be keeping an eye out for them as the ropes are marked in a peculiar way. Thankfully someone on here is helping me out.

Put some hooks through the rope in a location that you would know where they are. That'll keep em honest :) They'll be stuck to your pot when you go to collect.

Tue, 2014-01-07 11:49

I recon a paint bomb would be funnier. Have it hidden and have it so if you dont deactivate it after 10 min (maybe with a magnet or similar) it explodes. Wouldnt stop them pulling your pots, but god damn it would be funny if they stole them proper. Get back to the ramp with bright red paint splattered all over their deck and their faces. Oil based of course ;)

I hope those with pots do at least engrave or burn in huge letters their license number on the pot itself. No float swapping then.

I would like fisheries to have some "baited pots". No actual bait, but just a target for theives and pot pullers. Have it alert them when someone pulls it (and watch from a land based telescope), or take photos of the boat.

Quinns Rocks

Tue, 2014-01-07 13:23

There was a pro boat caught off Quinns rocks a couple of years back with amateur pots on the deck, they had suspected the boat for quite a while and set up their telescope up on the Quinns water tank top landing, when they spotted the wood duck pots going on board they pulled up alongside in a dinghy showed their badges and it was end of story.
They were fined something like $100 grand and lost 3 pots off their licence---worth $29 grand each at that time, expensive exercise.

Same thing goes on with pros over potting, I took a ride out with a mate on his crayboat, fisheries hopped on as we were leaving the jetty to come out with us to check the number of pots he had in the water, unbeknown to me, while I was chatting to them down the stern he was on the phone to their other boat telling the skipper to take 12 pots off the northern end of his line some 20nm away. He got away with it that time but got caught a couple of years later.

Thieving Bastards

Tue, 2014-01-07 11:29

There is only one way to catch these bastards, that is in the act.I doubt fisheries give a shit about Rec anglers pots.Had many pots stolen over the years, given up now.
Even if you make a note of suspicious people around pots or pulling a pot do you really think some pen pushing public servant gives a shit.
They go out at the start of the season with their $8 float swap yours for theirs and now have a $200 cray pot,if that gets stolen they loose $8.
Fisheries need to do a blitz on it and catch them in the act and take their boat, car and trailer the lot,and fine them for poaching.

paint

Tue, 2014-01-07 11:56

there are paint bombs that can be used on pots as fisheries used to use them to set up some idiot pro guys at one stage out of gero. the pot comes up the bag with the dye explodes and cannot be scrubbed off. prob a good way of doing it. not sure where to get the dye they used from but maybe a phone call to fisheries and they might tell you. doesn't matter where they go their boat will be splattered in dye. youll know who they are cos they will be the ones frantically trying to clean it off the whole way back to the ramp.

Dummy pot.

A dummy pot or pots put out by the Fishery would be a option with a GPS in it so it will go off when pulled ,bit like a shark monitor.

Can you wire shut the pots?

Tue, 2014-01-07 18:19

Can you wire shut the pots? I mean using heavy duty wire to wrap around the latch. Like this it will take them forever to cut it open etc and its wasting time for them to do. For the owner its not a problem if they know whey will need some kick ass tin snips to cut the wire before taking the catch out or to re-bait.
Imagine: every doing this to their pots will slow and pi$$ off the scum bags.

Waste of time

Tue, 2014-01-07 18:39

Waste of time wiring the latch shut, if they want the crays they just poke an arm down the neck or drop it on the deck and motor off so they can take their time with less chance of getting caught.

About the only way to keep your pots is to drop them right near the beach or have them that heavy that they will have to have a winch to get them up.

Happened to me and the kids

Tue, 2014-01-07 20:36

Happened to me and the kids just after the cray season started. I went out with a mate and dropped a couple of pots then went To our dive spot. Next couple days my mate went, but he said he couldn't find my pit, though he was joking. So went out 4 days later and yep 2 fully rigged pots gone. Saddest part was my young bloke was so excited to pull his first pot. I've had them for ages but never bothered with them as we dived. To scared to drop the other 2 out in case they go missing. Pisses me off

4 metre boat

Wed, 2014-01-08 18:38

Went for a run out on a 65 foot crayboat from Two Rocks a few years back, as we pulled our way down the line of pots we came across a 4 metre boat tie up to one of our floats , no one on board, a hookah with the motor running, no dive flag so we grappled the rope and gently started to pull the pot. Almost instantly 2 divers surfaced and started yelling abuse, not a good move when they were caught interfering with professional gear [tying up in a non emergency] and when we had control over their boat. The skipper gave them the biggest mouthful of abuse I've ever heard, took some pics and reported them to fisheries when we returned to port.

The rumour of a diver with his arm caught in a pot has been told up and down the coast for over thirty years that I know of but never found the bloke who is supposed to have done it.

I've been pulling shark nets and had a bloke drive past us by about 150 metres and start his drift and wonder why his gear got tangled up in my net, he got to lose his rigs and a colourful description on how much of an idiot he was.

You just need to make them

Wed, 2014-01-08 11:42

You just need to make them very very heavy, I see pots all the time diving that have no ropes / cut ropes and plenty of smashed pots out there as well. When the swell rolls through your pots will move, we dived in 28m last week and with a 2.5mswell got bashed around at that depth so at 20 m or less your pots will be facing some punishment unless they are very heavily weighted.

im sure half the pots I see are taken by the 'pot thieves'. I could have 10 pots this year if I bothered to raise and keep them, some of them looked pretty new as well.

i dropped 1 pot this year in October, lots and lots of weight in a high traffic area and it is still exactly where I left it.

yes, id agree with you re the

Wed, 2014-01-08 19:19

yes, id agree with you re the weight , it is amazing how many blokes think there gear is heavy enough , but in reality it needs more weight in in the bottom

we have 16 full x 3/8 steel rods on 5mm angle bases in our jarrah frame pots , then add another 1 fish plate as a minimum to keep em anchored, if you want to ride out big swells in 10 metres or less it is a must .

swell was up to 4 metres last week , when it dropped , checked all pots, bagged out and no damage to them at all , and none of them moved in the swell ,

carnarvonite iv been drift fishing on a coral lump of the capes and had one particular shark fisherman , run in from about 5 kmm away , and set his net across the lump we where drifting on , then get upset when we hooked it up and had to get our gear back , he tried to chase us with his big boat, but he wasnt fast or manouverable enough to run us down as was his aim , we sat in behind his shark drum at the back and his son went mental at us with abuse till he gave up the game , took video of the boat etc, DOT , did nought as he had 4onboard to our 2, his story had more voices

so it works both ways , I reckon you know the bloke I mean in bunbury

Now that wouldn't have been Brian or Nick , or Nick's son would it?
Know all the old fishermen from Bunbury, was sorry I wasn't in a position to come down for one's funeral last week. He skippered the very first shark boat I went out on, left Bunbury at 0330 and were back at the jetty at 0630, had to turn round as was too rough, about 32 foot planky, twin cylinder Lister diesel, 6 knots flat out with the sail up, this was in 1963.

Manuel, Luca, George, Johnnie and Peter's brother in law Mick [Champ] and next door neighbour on Austral parade.
He shark fished from Bunbury for many years, worked the estuary until the fisheries did the licence buy back thing, did salmon [ mostly at Hamelin, Bunkers or Smiths] whitebait and herring on the Geo bay beaches.

Sun, 2014-01-12 07:07

In the river back when i had the tinny out we were crabbing up and down the banks of Canning bridge. Some old fellas pulled up in a cuddy cab and dropped 10 of their pots in the same line of ours. Didn't tell them to stuff it as no one would listen to youngens like us. I knew which 4 pots were ours so i decided to leave them in the water longer than they did. Then the old boys come round for collection and infact take one of our pots, they know they've done it and head off towards point walter way. Couldn't chase them down in the tinny and i bet they knew that at the time. So spot stealing and theft all in 10 minutes

What a brilliant idea

Sun, 2014-01-12 12:56

How good would it be if someone come up with a paint bomb that went off if you didnt have a barcode thingy to disarm it with in say 2 minutes.

If they were cheap enough then it would be a great idea, and stop the tea leafs out there. Of course something that caused hours of pain would be better but that would probably upset the do-gooders.
